In response to World Blood Donor Day, a ceremony was organised in Hanoi on June 14 to honour 100 outstanding blood donors in Vietnam.
Addressing the event, Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam hailed the positive results of blood donation campaign achieved in recent years and the initiative on the establishment of blood bank.
The Deputy Prime Minister said that it is necessary to equip further facilities to store and collect donated blood.
The national steering committee for voluntary blood donations and the Ministry of Health should promote the blood donation campaign in the coming time, Deputy PM Dam asked.
The exemplars are from the 63 provinces and cities along with ministries and central agencies. They include Nguyen Huu Thuan who has donated blood 84 times, Ta Minh Dat (71 times) and Venerable Thich Thien Anh (63 times).
The eldest person is Nguyen Van Hung, 63, from Tay Ninh province. His family donated blood 76 times, including 24 times by Hung. He has also encouraged about 100 other people to participate in blood donation campaigns.
The youngest credited donor is Truong Thien Ho Thuyen, 20, from Can Tho city. She and her family have voluntarily given blood 15 times.
June 14 was chosen as World Blood Donor Day in 2004. This year’s event is themed: “Blood connects us all.”
The Health Ministry said that so far, 100% of provinces and cities, 98% of districts and 71% of communes, wards nationwide have established their steering committee for for voluntary blood donations.
In the past 8 years, since the Prime Minister's Decision on the establishment of the national steering committee for voluntary blood donations, Vietnam collected more than 6.7 million units of blood from donor across the country.
The number of blood donations collection rose from more than 500,000 units of blood (in 2008) to over 1.3 million units (in 2015), the proportion of the population participating in blood donation increased from 0.6% (in 2008) to more than 1.4% ( in 2015), especially the number of units of blood collected from donors increased from 71% (in 2008) to nearly 97% (in 2015).
The annual blood donation campaigns have contributed significantly to save millions of patients requiring blood transfusion, reducing the severe anemia that occurred in the previous years.
