On the occasion of Canadian Minister of International Development and La Francophonie Marie-Claude Bibeau paying a visit to Ha Noi on December 14, Canada’s statistics agency has reprorted that the Canada – Vietnam two-way trade increased significantly in the first nine months of this year, hitting US$2.8 billion.
Deputy PM Pham Binh Minh received Canadian Minister of International Development, lauded her visit and stressed that the Vietnamese Government wanted to promote comprehensive and practical relations with Canada. On behalf of the Vietnamese Government, he expressed his gratitude to Canadian PM Trudeau and the Canadian government for aid worth CAD12.9 million for a cooperative development project in Viet Nam, as well as their effective support to Viet Nam’s social development.
He asked both sides to enhance delegation exchanges and boost economic, trade and investment cooperation practically to take advantage of Viet Nam’s potential and opportunities given by the Trans-Pacific Partnership.
Bibeau expressed her pleasure to visit Viet Nam, saying that during the first foreign trip to attend the 23rd APEC meeting in the Philippines last month after taking office, PM Trudeau actively met President Truong Tan Sang to discuss ways to strengthen bilateral ties, adding that her four-day visit is to realize the outcomes of their meeting.
The guest affirmed that PM Trudeau and his government highly value Viet Nam’s important role in the region and want to strengthen bilateral relations in politics,diplomacy, trade, investment, education, science and development aid to Viet Nam.
In terms of trade, the report said that Vietnam’s exports to Canada in the reviewed period grew 31.4% to US$2.399 billion while Canada exported US$416 million worth of goods to Vietnam, up 41.2%.
The Southeast Asian nation's staple exports include wooden products, clothing, footwear, seafood, printers, electric cables, telephones, telecom equipment, coffee, cashew, transport vehicles and spare parts, rubber, plastic products, vegetables and fruits.
Canada ships to Vietnam fertilizer, seafood, soybean, wheat, iron and steel products, diamond, animal leather, machinery, artificial rubber, plastic materials, pharmaceuticals, beef, milk products, zinc and zinc alloy, nickel and aluminium.
Finally at the talk, Deputy PM Minh also asked the Canadian development agency to continue prioritizing development supports to Viet Nam, especially in green growth, response to climate change, hunger eradication, poverty reduction and the country’s hosting of the Asia- Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit in Da Nang in 2017.
