Celebrating 40th anniversary of Vietnam - Thailand diplomatic relations

On August 9, the Vietnam Union of Friendship Organisations (VUFO), and the Thai Embassy in Vietnam held a meeting to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Vietnam-Thailand diplomatic ties (August 6, 1976 - 2016)

Delivering speech at the celebration, Thai Ambassador to Vietnam Manopchai Vongphakdi expressed his pleasure at the flourishing relations between the two nations over the past four decades which have been lifted to a strategic partnership covering a broad array of fields ranging from politics and security to economy, trade, investment, culture, education and people-to-people exchange.
 
Chairman of Vietnam-Thailand Friendship Association,Ta Quang Ngoc, said greater attention has been paid to cross-cultural exchanges in addition to strengthening bilateral relations across the board, adding that the Vietnam-Thailand and Thailand-Vietnam Friendship Associations have seen flourishing collaboration over recent years.

The associations are set to hold an exchange between the two countries’ people in Thailand in November to elevate bilateral relations to a higher level. With 392 projects worth US$7 billion last year, Thailand was the fifth largest trade partner and also the 10th largest investor of Vietnam.

On this occasion, Vietnam-Thailand Friendship Association was honored to receive the merit of Vietnamese Prime Minister for their contributions in the development of diplomatic relations between the two countries the people, the nation.

** The same day, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh hosted a reception for former Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Bhichai Rattakul on a visit to Vietnam on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two countries. They noted their hope that the strategic partnership between Vietnam and Thailand will be deepened in the time ahead.

During their meeting, the two sides cherished the fruitful developments of the bilateral ties over the past four decades, especially the establishment of a strategic partnership in 2013. Deputy PM and FM Minh hailed the two countries’ efforts in celebrating their 40-year diplomatic ties, including their exchange of visits and organisation of cultural and artistic events.

Bhichai Rattakul, in reply, said the Thai Government and people always attach importance and wish to push forward cooperation with Vietnam. The former Thai Foreign Minister inked the joint communiqué on the establishment of diplomatic ties between Thailand and Vietnam in 1976.

At that time, the Thai Government declared that it would restore all relationships and cooperation with neghbouring countries, including Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia and Myanmar, he said. He noted Vietnamese – Thai relations have developed strongly over the last four decades, enjoying warm economic, culture and political relations. 

Bilateral ties have entered a new chapter in history and will continue flourishing in the future, Bhichay Rattakul said. He added though it is not easy to turn ASEAN, of which both countries are members, into a strong economic community, Vietnam and Thailand are completely able to reinforce their amity and partnership right at present.
