Children's Book Festival 2016 - Cultural rendezvous of children

Speaking at the first ever children’s book festival which opened in Hanoi’s Temple of Literature on June 1, Vice Chairman of the municipal People`s Committee Ngo Van Quy said the event will be held annually from this year.

The first children’s book festival, organised by the Hanoi People’s Committee in the Temple of Literature on June 1 to celebrate International Children’s Day, drew thousands of children and parents.

The event, that is part of meaningful activities for youth and children, creates a space in the honour of reading culture for the young generation.
The four-day event aims to promote a fondness for learning in children, inspire a love for reading and teach respect towards parents and teachers.
The festival, themed "Fun summer - Interesting books", includes 40 stands displaying a wide variety of books, from history to science.
At the event, the children have the opportunity to enjoy many interesting books. They could meet with several talented authors whose books have met with success among children, including Tran Dang Khoa, and Ho Thi Hai Au.
Besides taking part in story telling contests, the young audiences can also attend a photo exhibition featuring the life and work of President Ho Chi Minh, through books being published by Kim Dong publishing house, learn what it was like for children during wartime.
The children have a chance to discover the country’s history through various photos on display at the festival.
In addition, parents will be guided the skills to read books during the festival.
On the occasion, the organising board launched a writing contest to look for 32 ambassadors of reading culture, living in Hanoi. Students in primary and secondary schools in the city can participate in the contest by writing in Vietnamese or in English on the topic of their favourite books.
At the event, the organizers also launched the "Reading 10 minutes a day"  movement in the community.
After the opening ceremony, the children could buy discounted books at the book stands.
Addressing the opening ceremony of the festival, Vice Chairman of Hanoi People's Committee Ngo Van Quy stressed the important role of books in the life.
The Vice Chairman called upon everybody, in particular children to spend time reading books every day, at least 10 minutes each day, in order to enlarge their knowledge, develop their skills, broaden their mind, and become a good citizen in the future.
He noted that in the Action Month for Children, the capital of Hanoi has organised many other practical activities in order to respond and effectively implement the Prime Minister's decision on the  Vietnam Book Day.

Earlier, to encourage reading habits in local people, several other book festivals have been organised in Hanoi for both children and adults, including the Hanoi Spring Book Street in February and the Book Festival in April.
This year's festival, which runs until June 5, is expected to be not only a cultural activity for children, but also build a learning society through the movements of reading books and honouring reading culture for the young generation, from family, school and society.
