Cultural exchange in Hoi An consolidates Vietnam-Japan friendship

The 17th edition of Hoi An-Japan Cultural Exchange was held at the ancient town of Hoi An and its An Hoi Sculpture Garden in Quang Nam province last weekend with a number of effervescent activities.

The Hoi An- Japan Cultural Exchange is an annual event that has created strong resound and drawn the attention of several Japanese organizations and enterprises, thus contributing to strengthening the Vietnam-Japan friendship, the Government Portal reported.

The 17th edition of this event was held at the ancient town of Hoi An and its An Hoi Sculpture Garden in Quang Nam province last weekend with a number of effervescent activities including handicrafts display,  Japanese calligraphy teaching, traditional arts performing, Yosakoi dancing, Shakuhachi flute playing, Cosplay, among others.

The exchange saw the participation of Japanese cities of Sakai and Matsusaka and Nagasaki prefecture as from seaports in these localities, Japanese merchant fleets set sail to Hoi An some 400 years ago, Nhan Dan Newspaper reported.

Deputy Chairman of the Hoi An People’s Committee Nguyen Van Son said this was an occasion for Japanese friends and tourists to enjoy and experience culture and art activities besides the spiritual values of the two countries and learn about the shared history of Vietnam and Japan hundreds of years ago.

Japanese Ambassador to Vietnam Umeda Kunio stressed that both private and public sectors from Japan will enhance cooperation with Hoi An to promote the city’s attractiveness after it was recognized a world heritage 20 years ago.

Through non-refundable aid, the Government of Japan has made efforts to improve water quality in Hoi An’s Cau Pagoda area; JICA volunteers and experts in cultural and architectural heritage preservation are also actively working in Hoi An, Kunio said.

The event also saw the reenactment of the wedding of Vietnamese Princess Ngoc Hoa with Japanese merchant Sotaro Araki on the Hoai River.
