As schedule, by December 19, the first book city of Hanoi shall be officially opened. This is the result of an idea lasted and cherished for many years by Hanoi Department of Information and Communications and publishing units.
Hanoi possesses Dinh Le and Nguyen Xi Street running book-trading business to meet the demands of book reading and searching of Hanoi people. However, the noise and bustle of this business trend cannot be called Hanoi Book Street.
In 2014, the Prime Minister decided the day April 21 is the Vietnamese Book, Hanoi Department of Information and Communications planned to set a separate book street for Hanoi. At that time, Trang Tien Street was studied for Hanoi book festival on weekends. However, there are too many commercial stores existing on this street resulted in difficulties in book event operation. Trang Tien failed to be selected as Hanoi Book Street.
Admittedly, the demand to seek a location where help raise the demand for book reading of Hanoi people always receive supports from citizens and publishing units. After the first unsuccessful plan, a project of Hanoi Book Street continuously was studied and surveyed by Hanoi Department of Information and Communications.
Publishing houses were helpful to contribute to the Department. Dr. Nguyen Manh Hung, the Director of Thai Ha Books is one of people who concerned Hanoi Book Street for many years, said: "Hanoi, the 1000-year capital of civilization but without any book street is so unfortunately".
Therefore, Mr. Hung coordinated with Alpha Books and Hanoi Book Club team suggested for the project of Hanoi Book Street by the Department of Information and Communications. Between the two forms of Stable Street (regular activities during the year) and book street activities on the weekends, the first form sound feasible, by ensuring stability, and facilitation of reading culture organization and its operation maintenance.
After the survey, the Street 19/12 could be a feasible street for stable book street on weekends for further. Given the fact, the Street 19/12 after being completed, there will be fixed bookstalls open daily. Moreover, there will be more space for travelers to rest and read book, join events or community activities, space for coffee shops public toilet, etc.
On the occasion of the 70-year anniversary of National Resistance, the Street 19/12 is expected to open Book Street officially. City will be officially opened.
At first, Hanoi has just implemented pedestrian streets around Hoan Kiem Lake on weekends; the form of Book Street at garden after the statue of King Ly Thai To was also proposed to launch on weekends by the Department of Information and Communications.
However, all proposed projects are still awaiting approval of the City Chairman. "We should trust in a good future of books and reading culture in the Capital. We trust that Hanoi like Ho Chi Minh City, will have a cultural center as of Nguyen Van Binh Book road in District 1 soon", said Dr. Nguyen Manh Hung.
