First Hanoi forum on climate change response to be held
Vietnam is considered one of the five nations most affected by climate change, with huge risks of flooding, landslides, earthquakes, and coastal erosion.
The Hanoi Forum 2018 on climate change response will be held for the first time in the capital city of Vietnam between November 8-11 by the Vietnam National University-Hanoi (VNU) and the Korean Foundation for Advanced Studies (KFAS).
The information was announced by President of VNU’s Quality Assurance Council Mai Trong Nhuan, representative of the Hanoi Forum organizing committee at a press conference in Hanoi on November 7.
Under the theme "Towards Sustainable Development - Climate Change Response for Sustainability and Security”, the Hanoi Forum 2018 is expected to draw more than 300 delegates, including international leaders and former leaders, politicians, foreign and domestic scholars and scientists, and representatives from related groups and international organizations, Nhuan said.
He added that the forum aims to, among many objectives, define and analyze evidences of the impacts of climate change; discuss successful climate change response models and lessons; provide recommendations for government agencies, social organizations, and the private sector to draw up response policies and strategies; contribute ideas towards building a harmonious and low-carbon society; and intensify cooperation at the regional and international levels.
According to the World Bank, Vietnam is considered one of the five nations most affected by climate change, with huge risks of flooding, landslides, earthquakes, and coastal erosion.
Speaking about VNU’s contribution to climate change response, Prof. Dr. Mai Trong Nhuan stressed that the VNU has conducted researches and highly-qualified human resources training in the field of earth sciences, natural resources and environment management, climate change and interdisciplinary science.
Together with organizing and participating in many activities on climate change combating and sustainable development, VNU also has key laboratories and research teams related to this subject such as "advanced materials in environmental protection and green development" and "regional climate modeling and climate change", Nhuan added.
Besides, Prof. Mai Trong Nhuan stressed that reports presented at the Hanoi Forum 2018 will contribute to a report that Vietnam will deliver at the 24th Session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP24) slated to be held in December in Poland.
Moreover, two key policy dialogues on the management of natural resources in the Mekong Delta region and the building and development of the Red River region will also be part of the forum’s agenda, Nhuan said.
Discussions at the forum will focus in five main topics, including climate change evidence and security; human impacts of climate change; climate change response; policy and governance of climate change response and sustainability; and science, technology, and education for climate change response and sustainability, Nhuan added.
