Flash floods, landslides cause 49 deaths, US$43 million losses in Vietnam YTD

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development reported that natural disasters have been very serious in recent years when flash floods, landslides and riverbank and coastal erosion have increased, causing heavy human and property losses.

From the beginning of 2018, there have been twelve floods, flash floods and landslides, causing 49 deaths, 14 missing, 21 injured, and damanges of about VND1,000 billion (US$43 million) in Vietnam, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development said in a report on August 23.

The report shows that 5,592 families have been left without home or had to live in makeshift houses at present. Meanwhile, over 42,100 others are living in highly vulnerable areas and need to be evacuated.

In addition to supporting houses, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development also proposed to support the installation and testing of flash flood monitoring and warning equipment at some high risk locations in some localities.

House rebuilding support for flood victims is now an urgent task of the Vietnamese government, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc made statement when chairing a meeting with several ministries, sectors and localities on urgent housing assistance for households affected by flash floods and landslides.

PM Phuc expressed concern over the recent disasters in many areas, causing landslides and house drift, forcing people to live in tents and temporary shelters.

The PM suggested that the participants to focus on measures to provide housing for people affected by floods, flash floods, landslides as well as long-term measures.

PM Phuc said that in the short term, it is necessary to focus on the 5,592 families without home or living in temporary houses. He said central agencies and local authorities need to swiftly decide on necessary solutions and actively evacuate and assist affected residents.

With regard to the level of support, the PM assigned the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to propose appropriate levels of support for housing and infrastructure, in the spirit of equality and transparency, and soon submit them to the PM for decision.

The Ministry of Planning and Investment was requested to coordinate with the Ministry of Finance in proposing reserve capital for medium-term investment to allocate emergency capital to relocated areas under the project.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment were requested to promptly finalize and submit an evacuation plan for people in disaster-hit areas to the PM.

Meanwhile, ministries, sectors and localities have to actively coordinate with other forces in natural disaster prevention and control, the government leader said.
