The German government has sponsored EUR178,000 for Hoi An town in Quang Nam province to launch a project on the use of bicycle for transportation in the city, which runs until September 2019.
The information was announced by Hoi An People’s Committee at a seminar discussing a project on the use of bicycles in the ancient city of Hoi An on October 24.
The event is organized by the Hoi An People’s Committee in coordination with the German Corporation for International Cooperation (GIZ) and the Health Bridge in Vietnam. The seminar aims to introduce a project on the use of bicycles for free in the ancient city of Hoi An.
Speaking at the seminar, Vice Chairman of the Hoi An People’s Committee Nguyen Van Son said that the project will devise policies to popularize the use of bicycles in the city.
On this occasion, participants discussed policies on non-motorized transportation in Hoi An, along with experiences in using bicycles as the main vehicle in some cities around the world. They also assessed opportunities and challenges of the city’s bicycle development plan.
In 2012, Hoi An launched its first Car Free Day campaign, coinciding with its annual Nature Day in which over 5,000 people participated. The ancient city was the first city in Vietnam to host a Car Free Day in an effort to make the environment in the tourism hub cleaner.
Participants rode on bicycles and pedicabs around the city's old quarter to raise awareness about environmental protection among local people and tourists. A painting contest for children was held at An Hoi Bridge as part of the response to Car Free Day.
