Ha Giang opens Buckwheat Flower Festival

The second Tam Giac Mach Flower Festival was kicked off at an opneing ceremony in Dong Van district in the northwest province of Ha Giang on on October 15 night.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Nguyen Van Son, Deputy Secretary of the provincial Party Committee, Chairman of Ha Giang People's Committee said the second Tam Giac Mach Flower Festival makes an opportunity to introduce buckwheat - a typical flower of Ha Giang and the province's beautiful land to domestic and foreign visitors.

Planted by locals on slanting mountain slopes, buckwheat is the third important staple crop in Ha Giang after rice and corn.
A buckwheat flower arrangement contest, a photo exhibition and a geological exhibition featuring Ha Giang Karst Geological Park will be held at Dong Van Old Quarter.
The festival will be held in the districts of Dong Van, Quan Ba, Yen Minh and Meo Vac. The annual festival will include various activities like camping, folk singing, games and farming on tam giac mach (buckwheat) fields. 
Besides getting the opportunity to take photos on the buckwheat fields, visitors can taste wine and cakes made from the ​wheat. 
A street festival will also be organised in the area with traditional music and performances featuring actors in local ethnic costumes. 
Tam Giac Mach, or buckwheat, is a tiny wild pink flower with triangular-shaped leaves. The ​buckwheat fields attract many visitors to Ha Giang.

This year's festival is expected to draw about 3,000 tourists to visit the province’s world famous terraced fields, according to the organisers.
The second Buckwheat Flower Festival lasts for two days.
