Hanoi audiences are treated to the novel expressions of Hang Trong folk paintings displayed in the Nam Huong communal house, on a street of the capital's Old Quarter.

Hang Trong paintings not drawn on paper but lacquer and silk are showcased as part of the project “From Tradition to Tradition” which encourages young artists to preserve the folk art and values of cultural heritages. |

The exhibition features Hang Trong folk paintings, a school of folk art which have existed for 400 years, with two main lines of paintings namely worshiping paintings and Tet paintings. These lines of paintings would fall completely into oblivion if no efforts for preservation and promotion are made, according to experts. |

The project is the brainchild of Nguyen The Son, a lecturer at the Vietnam University of Fine Arts, inspired by the newly restored Nam Huong communal house on Hang Trong street, the home of this school of folk paintings, and it is also here that the paintings are fading away. Son hoped a younger generation of artists will continue to preserve and promote the history of this line of paintings. |

| The project is an effort to create dialogue and to continue writing on values of this traditional painting by using other Vietnamese traditional Painting medium, that is lacquer and silk. |

The project will be meaningful for those who start looking for a creative path to independently research and exploit this line of paintings to include in contemporary art works, Mr. Son added. |

The exhibition brings young people and the community closer to the folk art in particular and values of cultural heritages in general which are in danger of falling into oblivion. |

The project is an opportunity for a group of students from the lacquer and silk majors of the Faculty of Painting, Vietnam University of Fine Arts, to interact and learn from the last artist of the line - artisan Le Dinh Nghien. |

| Each work in this exhibition is an improvisational plan, from works with design trends to highly interactive experimental works containing reflections on the legacy of traditional culture in modern life. |

This exhibition is also an opportunity to encourage and honor the individual work of students, young artists on their path of independent creativity ahead, always interested in traditional cultural heritage values, local culture to incorporate into artistic practices and continue to write new creative values. |

It is also a way of preserving and promoting the values of heritage in a more creative way. |

The event is expected to arouse love and appreciation for not only Vietnamese traditional cultural heritages but also for other cultures and ethnic groups, when the next part of this project will connect to the cultural heritage of traditional Japanese woodblock printing. |

Such an exhibition will be improvised with traditional Vietnamese materials such as lacquer and silk medium which will take place next year. |
