19/12 Street in Hoan Kiem district has officially become Hanoi’s first book street from May 1.
The street stretchs about 200 meters, connecting Hai Ba Trung and Ly Thuong Kiet streets and officially opens after 4 months of contrucstion.

The book street will follow the design inspired by Hanoi's Old Quarter. December 19 Street is considered to be an upgraded version of Dinh Le – Nguyen Xi streets where books have been sold for decades.
Last February, the spring book event held in Hanoi attracted thousands of people and brought in VND4 billion ($178,800) worth of books in three days.
The funding for creating the book street and organizing related events will come from the city’s budget. The Hanoi Department of Information and Communications is responsible for managing the content of books. Book stalls are available for publishers and booksellers at a fee.
At the beginning of this year Ho Chi Minh City introduced its own book street. In six months more than 200,000 books were sold and revenue of VND15 billion ($673,845) earned.
Hanoi Book Street includes 16 book stalls with simply desgin in harmony with surrounding space. The simple and smart arrangement ensures the civilization, friendliness; facilitating attendance of the disable, children and the old. Gathering here are prestigious Vietnam publishers and related units such as: The Truth Publisher, University of Education Publisher, Kim Dong Publisher, Women Publisher, Nha Nam Joint Stock company, Tien Phong Joint Stock Company…
The book street aims to create space for reading lovers in Hanoi to approach new books, exchange idea, talk with Vietnamese as well as international writers. The construction plan was completed after consulting from Hanoi’s Committee of Planning and Architecture.

Right after the inauguration, on May 1st, chain of attractive events will be continously held:
- 10h30-11h30: Kim Dong Publisher carries out “Hanoi’s childhood in Era of budget subsidies”, talkshow with writer Duc Pham on occasion of introducing the book “Collective zone with violet flower frame”.
- 14h30 - 16h30: Talkshow “Don’t let people raise voice for you” with author – journalist Duc hien (Chief secretary of the paper Phap luat Thanh pho Ho Chi Minh) and journalist Le Thanh Ha (Vice chief editor of Sinh vien Vietnam – Hoa hoc tro), carried out by Huy Hoang Culture Company.
- 16h30 - 17h00: Talkshow with Doctor Nguyen Manh Hung – General Director of Thai Ha joint stock book company with topic “Book and Reading Culture”.
On May 6, Women Publisher will hold talkshow “What Vietnam education learns from Japan”, with introduction of 3 books from author Nguyen Quoc Vuong – “What Vietnam education learns from Japan”, “History subject is not boring as you think” and “Scent of native land”.
From May 6 to May 7, Youth Publisher, British Council and Vietnam Hogwarts Club will introduce Harry Portter publications to mark 20th year from the first edition.
