After two weeks, Hanoi Book Street on Dec 19 Road welcomed nearly 20.000 visitors purchase books and join activities related to reading culture.
Sharing with reporter of Hanoitimes, Mr. Dinh Hong Phong – Vice Chairman of Hoan Kiem District People’s Committee said: Hanoi Book Street attracted nearly 20,000 visitors coming here to purchase books and join activities related to reading culture since its debut on 2017 May 1.
According to Mr. Phong, a website on Hanoi’s book street is expected to be launched as soon as possible to widely introduce information about the displayed books and activities held there, making it become an attractive destination in the capital.
Mentioning upcoming renovation of the Street, Hoan Kiem District is considering creating more shade for reader enjoying the space here during hot summer days, said Mr Phong. The government is about to grow more trees, flowers as well as improve security for the area. In addition, the district is going to organize extra events here. Currently, Hoan Kiem District sumitted proposal to Hanoi Department of Information and Communications of establishing Code of Conduct for better management of the Book Street.
Those visitors include children, teenagers, young people and the elderly as well as foreigners, mainly gathering there in the evenings and on weekends. Currently, there are 16 book booths, one coffee shop and one flower kiosk along the street which were designed harmoniously, creating a beautiful space imbued with traditional cultural identity.
Gathering here are prestigious Vietnam publishers and related units such as: The Truth Publisher, University of Education Publisher, Kim Dong Publisher, Women Publisher, Nha Nam Joint Stock company, Tien Phong Joint Stock Company… “The opening of Hanoi Book Street draws special attention of Vietnamese as well as foreign readers. In the very first operation days, many people came to visit the street and consider it as a development of the book reading culture”, Vice Chairman of Hoan Kiem District People’s Committee said.
The book street aims to create space for reading lovers in Hanoi to approach new books, exchange idea, talk with Vietnamese as well as international writers. The construction plan was completed after consulting from Hanoi’s Committee of Planning and Architecture.
