Hanoi braces for flooding as heavy rain continues

Prolonged downpours on July 2 have put Hanoi at high risk of urban flooding, with dozens of streets already affected or on alert.

THE HANOI TIMES — Hanoi will continue to see moderate to heavy rain throughout the day, with expected rainfall of 20–30mm in most areas and over 50mm in some parts, according to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.

Streets such as Thai Ha, Le Duan, Truong Chinh, Ton That Tung, Nguyen Trai, and Lieu Giai are among those likely to be submerged, with water depths reaching 15-40cm depending on location.

Rainwater is expected to drain within 30 to 60 minutes after the downpour ends, but low-lying areas may take longer to clear.

The broader northern region, especially Lao Cai and Son La, recorded over 90mm of rain overnight. Warnings for flash floods and landslides remain in effect across mountainous areas of Thanh Hoa and Nghe An, where soil moisture has reached saturation levels.

Rain is forecast to continue in the North until July 3. River levels on small tributaries could rise by 2-4 meters, potentially exceeding alarm level 2.

In central and southern Vietnam, scattered thunderstorms are expected in the afternoon and evening, with localized heavy showers reaching 70mm in some areas.

Authorities urge residents to monitor weather updates and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall.
