Ambassadors of this year's earth hour campaign included MC Phan Anh, Miss Thuy Van – Second Runner-up of Miss Vietnam, Singer Noo Phuoc Thinh and Actress Nha Phuong. Numerous activities took place during the launch, including an exhibition of green products, a 60+ photo area, collective games, outstanding art performances, a flashmob involving 1000 volunteers to promote Earth Hour 2017 and an exchange with ambassadors.
Addressing the launching ceremony, Deputy head of the General Directorate of Energy Phuong Hoang Kim stressed that Vietnam has been one of the five countries most affected by the natural disaster and climate change in the world. In Vietnam, over 50 years, the mean temperature has increased by 0.70C, and the sea level has risen by 20 cm. El Nino and La Nina cause more and more impacts. Climate change has really made natural disasters, especially storms, floods and droughts, increasingly severe. According to climate change scenarios, in 2011, Vietnam’s yearly mean temperature will go up by 30C, the total yearly and seasonal rainfall increases while the rainfall in dry seasons will decrease, the sea level can rise to 1 m compared to the 1980-1999 period.
He called for all individuals and organizations in Viet Nam to participate in the programs responding to Earth Hour 2017 with simple action, such as turning off lights and unnecessary electric appliances for one hour or organizing activities in response to environmental protection and dealing with the impact of climate change.
In responding this year’s campaign, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang and 60 provinces and cities nationwide will join the event, hosting a series of activities, such as walking, cycling, along with signing commitments, etc. Local residents will be encouraged to turn off unnecessary electric devices from 20:00 - 21:30 p.m on March 25,
Other activities between enterprises and Earth Hour will be held in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, with a view to call on 2,000 firms to commit to save electricity at factories and production bases. The highlight will be a switching-off ceremony to be held at Hanoi’s August Revolutionary Square on the evening of March 25.
Earth Hour, organised by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), is a worldwide grassroots movement calling for people to join hands for our planet. The campaign has received responses from over 7,000 cities in 172 countries. It was first launched in Vietnam in 2009.
