People`s Committee Hanoi held a ceremony to launch the 18th National Week for Occupational Safety and Health – Fire and Explosion Prevention on March 19.
Attending the event were Deputy Minister of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs Doan Mau Diep and Vice Chairman of Hanoi People's Committee Ngo Van Quy.
According to Deputy Director of the municipal Department of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs Hoang Thanh Thai, in 2015, the city occurred 129 work accidents, 159 fires, explosions and more than 1,000 incidents.
The number of labour accidents and explosives has been contained and decreased in the recent years, thus contributing significantly to remain the city's stable security, politic, social order and safety, he added.
To minimise occupational accidents, fires and explosions in 2016 and the following years, Vice Chairman Ngo Van Quy asked relevant agencies, organisations, businesses and local citizens to strictly implement the directives, decisions and regulations on Occupational Safety and Health – Fire and Explosion Prevention.
The municipal Department of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs and Fire Police were required to coordinate with relevant authorities to guide units and enterprises in training Occupational Safety and Health – Fire and Explosion Prevention for labourers.
The National Week for Occupational Safety and Health – Fire and Explosion Prevention was organised in the northern province of Hung Yen on March 20.
The 18th annual week aims to urge workers and enterprises to improve their own sense of responsibility while asking for stringent supervision and punishments for violations.
Addressing the ceremony, Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam stressed that occupational safety is a fundamental right on which the State’s, businesses’ and labourers’ rights, obligations and responsibilities are fully specified in the law.
Occupational safety and health, and fire and explosion prevention must be implemented all year round at all places, he said.
According to the steering board for the national week, more than 7,600 work accidents and 2,000 fires were reported in Vietnam in 2015.
The incidents were attributed by employers’ ignorance of safety measures and training for workers. Besides, labourers themselves also violated safety standards and did not use protective equipment.
