Noi Bai International Airport has been voted as one of the 30 best Asian airports in 2016 by the airport-review website “The Guide to Sleeping in Airports”.

The Hanoi airport jumped nine spots to the 19th place from the 28th in 2015 on the list based on the website’s passenger survey. It also came 32nd among the worlds’ 70 best airports for sleeping. The annual survey asked travellers to rate their airport experience based on factors such as services and facilities, terminal cleanliness, customer service and comfort.

In 2014, the website listed Noi Bai and Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City among the worst in Asia. Due to its low ranking, Noi Bai’s management board attempted to improve service quality at the airport.

Earlier on March, 2016, Noi Bai International Airport has received the "World's Most Improved Airport" award from Skytrax – the UK’s specialist research advisor to the air transport industry – in Germany’s Cologne city. The award is based on the relative annual quality performance by all airports featured in the World Airport Survey.

In addition to the award, Noi Bai has also jumped 136 levels to rank 82 nd among the world’s top 100 best airport this year. The list was compiled by Skytrax based on passenger votes.

The Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) plans to upgrade domestic terminal T1 at Noi Bai International Airport, with expenditure expected to reach 244 billion VND (10.84 million USD). In a document recently sent to the Ministry of Transport, the company said it would expand the area of the terminal and repair the staircases, check-in desks and luggage conveyor belts.

"This is needed to meet rapid growth of the aviation market and assure the quality of passenger services at Noi Bai International Airport by 2018. It is possible that the terminal will not be able to meet necessary exploitative requirements in the coming months without the upgrade," a representative of the ACV reportedly said.

The passenger throughput at T1 is expected to reach 12 million in 2015, after hitting nearly 10 million during the past nine months, according to the company. T1 currently has an area of 115,000 square metres with 100 check-in counters, six luggage conveyor belts and 19 boarding gates. International terminal T2 at Noi Bai began operations a year ago with an investment capital of 900 million USD, with the capability of handling some 10 million passengers each year.

Noi Bai is an important airport linking air routes from Europe, Southeast Asia, Northeast Asia and the Asia Pacific. Thirty-six domestic and international airlines are operating here, with an average 340 flights per day.
