On December 13, the Hanoi People’s Committee decided to continue maintaining walking streets surrounding Sword Lake and its nearby areas in 2017, and increasing measures to make them more and more orderly.
Nguyen Duc Chung, Chairman of the Hanoi People’s Committee, affirmed that organising walking streets at weekends has been welcomed by local residents and tourists. In upcoming time, the walking streets will be implemented scientifically and orderly to turn it into an exciting cultural space. The walking streets will be open to the public on national days such as April 30, May 1 and September 2.
Chairman Chung said Hanoi will organise big events in the walking zone. The Cherry (Sakura) Blossom festival will be an annual event of the walking zone from March 18-23. Other cultural programmes include ASEAN, Asian and European cuisine festivals and art performances of the Central Highlands, the Northwestern region, the Central region and the Red River Delta. Exhibitions on village craft products; book, beer and street festivals and other activities will be also organised in the walking zone.
Hanoi Pedestrian Street is deployed from September 1, 2016 and applying from 19h to 24h in weekends (Friday, Saturday, Sunday), that is applied to 16 streets around Hanoi old quarter. To create favorable conditions for residents and visitors, the Hanoi Department of Transport has allocated 78 stops for keeping cars, motorcycles, bicycles with an area of over 17,000 m2, accommodating 87 passenger cars, trucks; 600 cars and more than 2,700 bicycles, motorcycles to serve people to walk around Sword Lake. The walking zone surrounding Sword Lake in downtown Hanoi has quickly become a hit, drawing dozens of thousands of local and international tourists each weekend.
Once deployed, Pedestrian Street becomes a favourite meeting place of Hanoians when assembling into a wide variety of traditional art from modern to ancient drum dance, dragon dance, chau van singing to modern dance, with the participation of the masses if you feel interested. This is also a favorite spot of the young people living in Hanoi to create space so that they can show off their talents, gathered and an ideal location for group meetings. Besides, joining a pedestrian street, the young, children can participate in familiar folk games such tugging, catching each other, paint ingmask and so on.
Joining the promenade, the foreign visitors also prove extremely excited because of fancy games, as well as the beloved image of Sword Lake and Hanoians’ friendliness.
