Hanoi strives to minimize gender imbalance at birth

In 2018, Hanoi recorded the birth of 117,784 babies, representing a rate of 15.13 births per 1,000, an on-year decrease of 0.17 per thousand. Meanwhile, the sex ratio at birth was 113 boys per 100 girls.

Hanoi has set a goal to deal with the sex ratio at birth imbalance and keep the rate at 113 girls per 100 boys in 2019, according to the Hanoi Department of Health.

Director of the Population and Family Planning Department of Hanoi Ta Quang Huy said that in 2019, the city deployed population and family planning work to districts, striving to control sex ratio at birth, to bring it back to the natural law, contributing to a stable population structure and improving the population quality of the capital.

According to the Hanoi Department of Health, currently, the population and family planning work faces some difficulties due to the large population size, large area, fertility reduction but not sustainable. The rate of third child birth decreased but not in a stable way. In some districts, the fertility rate and the rate of third child birth remain high.

In 2018, the capital recorded the birth of 117,784 babies, representing a rate of 15.13 births per 1,000, an on-year decrease of 0.17 per thousand. Meanwhile, the sex ratio at birth was 113 boys per 100 girls.

Along with focusing on controlling the increased imbalance in the sex ratio at birth, the city will continue implementing its project on screening  before and during pregnancy to boost population quality. Communication campaigns to raise public awareness on caring for children’s physical development via exercises and nutrition are also slated to be implemented.

Hanoi also focuses on raising awareness and changing behaviors to take care of physical development and height for children, forming a society-wide movement to take care of physical development, stature, and practice healthy lifestyles, regular exercises, and sports and use appropriate nutrition.
