Hanoi welcomes 21.5 million tourist arrivals in nine months

The city is striving for the target of receiving 29 million tourists and making VND103 trillion (US$4.4 billion) from tourism by the end of 2019.

Hanoi received around 21.5 million visitors in the first nine months of 2019, up 9.5% year-on-year (yoy) and meeting 74.46% of this year’s plan, said the city’s Department of Tourism on September 24.

Of the total, Hanoi hosted 4.7 million foreign tourists, increasing by 10.1%, and 16.8 million domestic holidaymakers, up 9.3% versus the same period in 2018.

The total revenue collected from tourists was VND74,734 billion (US$3.2 billion), up 30.9% against the same period last year and representing 72% of the whole year’s plan.

During nine months of 2019, the average occupancy rate of hotels in Hanoi was 70.55%, an increase of 6.1 percentage points yoy while that of four to five-star hotels was 82%. Foreign visitors who stayed over in Hanoi were mostly of South Korean, Chinese and Japanese nationalities.

Hanoi is one of 19 nominees to compete for the title of “World’s Leading City Destination 2019” in World Travel Awards, the de facto “Oscar” award in the tourism field.

The nomination is an opportunity for Hanoi to further promote its brand as a hospitable, friendly and quality destination, thereby, luring more visitors to the city, according to an official of the Department of Tourism.

Besides, the city has also been named among several world tourism rankings this year including 26 best Asian cities for a combination of business and leisure by Japan’s All Nippon Airways, 25 destinations in Asia and 25 destinations in the world in 2019 by TripAdvisor. Most recently, it is listed among the 17 best places in Asia by CNN.
