Music Performance “The Fifth Cardinal Direction”
To celebrate the 45th Anniversary of diplomatic relataions Austria - Vietnam, you are invited to the performance “The fifth cardinal direction”, a composition by Gregor Siedl & Cao Thanh Lan.
The fifth cardinal direction can be found in ancient Asian-, Native American- and Indo-European cultures and represents the center, the here and now, the inner self. This composition is an introspective journey to the inner self and its transformations during a person’s lifetime.

Music Night “Parallel Asteroid”
Manzi is pleased to host ‘Parallel Asteroid’ – an electro-acoustic composed improvisation for saxophone and synthesizer.
‘Parallel Asteroid’ connects experimental, acoustic and electronic sounds with the aesthetics of contemporary music. Their work is a research into the relationship between electronic and organic sounds. The synthesizer with its super-human capabilities extends, blends in and sometimes hides inside the acoustic heart, while the clarinet/saxophone brings the human vitality and organic texture to the sound combination.
The musicians are Vietnamese pianist and synthesizer player – Cao Thanh Lan and Gregor Siedl from Austria on clarinet/saxophone, gamecalls and tubes. “Parallel Asteroid” have been touring extensively in Europe, Japan, Brazil, China, Taiwan and Vietnam.

Lecture and Demonstration on “Ninja”
The Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam proudly presents “Lecture and Demonstration about NINJA” in cooperation with Japanese National University, Mie University on 16 and 17 of November in Hanoi.
Japanese ninjas have become popular to the world through films, anime, manga and so on. But has anyone seen a real ninja? What type of person a ninja is? What skills does a ninja have?
Mie University is located in the Mie prefecture in Japan. Mie prefecture is known as the home of the Iga ninjas. Researchers here study about ninjas from different cultural and historical view points.
The lecture and demonstration will be conducted in Japanese with Vietnamese interpretation.
Stand-Up Comedy with Phil Kay
If you know anything about the UK comedy scene then you will have heard of the legendary Scottish comedian Phil Kay. A storyteller and a self-proclaimed master of mirth and mayhem, having Phil perform in Hanoi is a little bit of a coup. The guy is a comedic genius. And it’s not just us saying that.
Constantly playing with words and bubbling with exuberance, when Phil Kay gets on the stage he dances around it like a giant child who has woken up with an adult’s body. As Claire Smith from The Scotsman wrote in a review of this year’s show at the Edinburgh Fringe, “He is fertile, feral, otherworldly and exploding with energy… What an absolute joy to see Phil Kay bringing a sweaty cellar full of people to full-on, excited, rolling laughter.”
It’s not just The Scotsman who think highly of this comedic maestro. On the scene for almost three decades — in 1994 he won the award for Best Live Stand-Up at the British Comedy Awards — many a reviewer has fallen foul of Phil’s talent for making people laugh.

Exhibition “Portrait of Life VI – The Bag”
You are invited to the installation exhibition “Chan dung cuoc song tap VI – Cai tui” (literal translation: “Portrait of Life, Episode VI – The bag”) by artist Tran Duc Quy.
As a kid, I was language-delayed, often wandered and played on my own, with various objects, trees, colored chalks and modeling clay. Those maybe the signs of what they call nowadays “autism”. The grown-ups in my hometown, who live simply, don’t understand kids like that, and they often told me: Maybe we have to crack open your skull and tilt it upside down to see what’s in your head?
Then I grew up, learned how to speak, and communicate normally with people around me. But! What they said about “cracking open the skull” stuck in my mind even when I grew up. When I was young, I imagined a hundred ways how they (and I) got our skulls cracked open, what was in there, which was both intriguing and terrifying.
Upon learning about art and cultural history, I found out that, if they anatomize the physical body with skin, muscle, blood, bones and hair for medical and psychological research, they have also “anatomized” to find the human soul a long time ago through metaphors and hyperboles. Buddhism said the human body is a “skin-bag full of filth”, several others religions consider the body as a “temporary home for the soul”, waiting for the day to be released back to the universe.
But is that really true? And is that a default? I tried to find the answer with my own sculpture language, and to reply to my own secret question. Because I don’t want to hear those ready-made answers.

Filmstoryteller 13: When Cinema Speaks Poetry
You are invited to the event “FILMstoryteller 13: When Cinema Speaks Poetry” which comprises two film screenings: “Poetry” on November 15 and “The Postman” on November 29.
The event, in collaboration with the Book Club of the Hanoi National University of Education, aims to explore the linkage and interdependence of cinema and the written language through discussions of films that were adapted from works of literature. We hope that each and every participant will find something to take away from the screenings.

Solo Exhibition “Du Ca” by artist Doan Xuan Tang
Dong Phong Art Gallery is pleased to announce the solo exhibition “Du Ca” (Sing and Dance) by artist Doan Xuan Tang at Dong Phong Art Gallery, No 3 Ly Dao Thanh Street, Hanoi from 1st November to 30th November, 2017. Opening reception starts at 6 p.m on 1st November.
The artist will show his latest paintings at the exhibition, featuring landscapes and people of the mountainous area Du Ca. The paintings are done in acrylic, charcoal, golden leaves on paper and canvas. In “Du Ca”, mountain ranges are covered in clouds all year round. The bare feet were dyed by the miracle on top of the mountain. The bare feet “dance and sing” with the clouds and the wind. They wander through the mountains, drop into deep valleys, traverse streams beneath the sun, and suddenly fly off into infinite space.
