ĐôcPhêt: A Moving Image Festival
In what has now transpired as the final edition of their annual festival before Hanoi DocLab house moves out of their almost ten-year base, DocFest 2017 doubles in scope. Introducing Hanoi ĐốcPhết – a whole week-long naughty-cousin’d programme running in multiple venues across the city in parallel to the core DocFest happenings at the Goethe-Institut. Beyond structural changes and unencumbered of institutional pressures, ĐốcPhết constitutes an exploration of DocLab’s future avenues, in which there might exist yet a larger role to play for grass-root, collective action.
By design or otherwise, a symbiosis exists between the festival’s SEACRN-led symposium – under the theme ‘Time, Space and the Visceral’ and the ĐốcPhết programme. The latter’s highlights include ‘The Kalampag Tracking Agency,’ an ambitious survey of over thirty eventful years of Philippine moving image and video works; Lau Kek Huat’s ‘Absent without Leave’ and Đoàn Hồng Lê’s ‘My Father the Last Communist’ – both delving into, from opposite sides, the legacy of Cold War in South East Asia, through personal memories of the filmmakers’ fathers; a selection of features and shorts from members of Harvard University’s Sensory Ethnography Lab, wherein the physicality of sound and its omnipresence in 21st century urban environments are made manifest through images of grit and destruction – treading a similar path, experimental documentary ‘We Don’t Care about Music anyway’ explores the madness of Tokyo’s noise music scene in relation to its surroundings; a retrospective on Au Sow-Yee, an artist working at the forefront of South East Asian moving image; the Vietnam premiere of ‘The Man Who Built Cambodia,’ a documentary on Vann Molyvann, whose practice came to define the architectural blueprint of post-independence Cambodia; and various found-footage works sprinkling throughout.
Beside the aforementioned strands, ĐốcPhết also features a five-channel expanded-cinema installation by photographer Jamie Maxtone-Graham at Nha San Collective; a sound concert/installation by sonic ethnographer Ernst Karel at VUI Studio; as well as an 11-hour event at Manzi wherein the feature film ‘Manamakana’ and a programme of shorts will play on loop.
Last but definitely not least, as per a DocFest tradition, a crop of new Vietnamese artist’s films will be showcased. Beside familiar names that have appeared in previous DocFest editions – Đỗ Văn Hoàng, Trương Quế Chi, Ngô Thanh, Tạ Minh Đức, Đoàn Hồng Lê and Nguyễn Trinh Thi – be sure to look out for the new faces: Hải Yến, Huệ Nguyễn, Lê Xuân Tiến, Thịnh Nguyễn, Lê Đình Chung, Nguyễn Song, Vi Đỗ and Trâm Lương.

The Indian Business Chamber in Vietnam (Incham Hanoi) and the Indian community is going to celebrate one of the biggest Indian festivals – the ‘Festival of Lights – Diwali Night’ in Hanoi on Saturday, 11th November 2017.
Over the years, the celebration of this festival has become a permanent fixture in the capital’s cultural calendar, growing from strength to strength each year. And every year, joining us are the distinguished guests from all walks of life including the Government, business, professional and cultural communities, and especially the vibrant expat community.
This year, a grand cultural night is being organized which will “bring the true Indian Spirit to Hanoi”. It’s highlighted by the colours and values of time-honored Indian culture, namely Bollywood dances and music, henna, lucky draws to spice the event. More especially, coming to the Diwali 2017, once again our rich Indian culture will be showcased through the exciting performances by Indian Community members as well as a special performance of singer Janice Phuong – Vietnam Idol 2016 and DJ Sameer Naik from India. There will also be smattering of Indian gourmet delicacies and drinks to spoil one’s palate.
Diwali Night 2017 is open for all age groups and welcomes all nationalities who want to join in celebrating this festival. The tickets are now available at various places and can also be brought online. The tickets prices are kept very attractive and presently under promotion.
Classical Music Concert “Autumn Bamboo 2”
The Vietnamese Sức Sống Mới bamboo orchestra, the Japanese Waraku bamboo orchestra and the Hanoi Voices choir will reunite on the stage of L’Espace for two exceptional concerts. Chorists and musicians from several countries will perform classic works by French and Vietnamese composers.
Under the baton of conductor Dong Quang Vinh, the “Autumn Bamboo” concert is a beautiful marriage between Western music and oriental instruments, between voice and instruments, between the taste of tradition and that of freedom.

The 20th Vietnamese Film Festival will be held in Danang from 24 to 28 Nov 2017.
From 08 to 14 Nov 2017, the 20th Vietnamese Film Festival celebration week with free screenings of 29 films will take place in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
The opening of Vietnamese Film Festival celebration week will be held on 08 Nov 2017 at 7.30 pm at the National Cinema Center, Hanoi with the movie “Sai Gon anh yeu em” (translation: Sai Gon I love you).
Night of Experimental Music “Sound of the Mountain”
Manzi is pleased to host ‘Sound of the Mountain’ – an experimental concert featuring Canadian artists – Elizabeth Millar and Craig Pedersen – with special guest artist Ngo Tra My (đàn bầu – one-string zither).
A duo featuring the hollowed-out sounds of Elizabeth Millar and Craig Pedersen on amplified clarinet and trumpet, ‘Sound of the Mountain’ comes from a strong history of improvisation and extended performance techniques, offering their audience long-form deep listening experiences through the sculpting of vitalized breath.
