Helping children passing by streets

With sweat on his face, Quang tried to direct transport vehicles in the direction of Hoa Lac – Xuan Mai. His whistle seemed to overwhelm the noise of traffic. Only when the traffic light turned red then he took those children to pass the street.

Without any reminding or a thank you, but for recent 6 years, Vu Van Quang (1952) in Trung Son Tram Ward, Son Tay, Hanoi has been showing responsibilities in taking children passing by the streets.

The street through Trung Son Tram ward is where nearly 900 students of the Trung Son Tram Preliminary School go to school everyday. As such, every noon or afternoon, Quang goes to the school gate to do his job. “I have to be there 30 minutes earlier to instruct parents picking up their children. We have 3 people, each stand at the end of the road, and I will directly help students passing the street” – Quang said.

16.30 p.m is when students start going home and the street becomes chaos and crowded. Quang with his stick and whistle trying to get students passing by the street. “Stressful, yes, but I feel comfortable to help them get to the other side of the street safely” – he said. Going to the other side then he heard a little voice of Do Minh Anh (3rd grade): “Grandpa, help me to get over there!”. 3 years in school is also the time he helped Minh Anh and other students pass the street. “Everyday he helped us pass the street, not only me but also other as well, thanks to him that I can pass the street safely” – Minh Anh said.

The narrow street with crowded vehicles are the fear of students. Many are afraid of passing the street without Quang. However, many still have to pass the street to go home, and there always a risk for traffic accident. “At the beginning, many said that this is my job. But I am getting used to it and ignore what people say” – Quang remembered. “For me, this job is my happiness and pride, as what I do is for other people” – Quang continued. He still could not forget many students got into accidents when passing the street, so he wants to take this job to ensure the safety for them.

His job often lasts 45 minutes when students start going home. He also started working as civil protector at Trung Son Tram ward, so when things get done, he backs to school and asks whether any student still there to pass the street. If there is no one left, only then he goes home on his old bicycle. In 6 years doing his job, there has not any accident, and people in Trung Son Tram ward is happy with his works. “Everyday Quang is here regardless of the weather. Without him, we are very worried as this street has high risk of traffic accident. Many times have my heart stopped witnessing accident between students’ bikes and vehicles” – Vu Thi Lan (a student’s mother) said. Principal of Trung Son Tram preliminary school said: ”the school is located near highway, so there is a lot of traffic. But with Quang here to help students passing street, there has not been any accident. We are very grateful to his action”.

The Chairman of Trung Son Tram Ward People’s Committee Phung Van Phuc said, for 6 years, Quang has been dutifully fulfilled his job. At the same time, he also promoted and encouraged parents to be aware of traffic order for their children’s safety. His action and responsibilities led to the appreciation and support from others. Phuc added, the 21A highway is under rehabilitation process since 2011, which is severely degraded. In order to avoid the construction, many trucks go in the opposite way, which cause danger to people. As such, it is necessary for the highway to be completed quickly and ensure the safety for students, as well as people in traffic.
