ICT generate value of 67.6 billion USD for Vietnam

According to the Vietnam Information & Communication Technology (ICT) White book 2017, software industry is the IT industry sector with highest average of wage per employees at 154 million VND/ per person/ per year.

The ICT White book 2017 shows, with the average wage in 2016 of employees at approx 6,900 USD/ per person / per year (equivalent to 153.7 million VND per person/ per year), software industry has the highest average of wage in IT industry sector, which is nearly double the average wage of employee in hardware industry. 


Specifically, average wage of employees in hardware industry in 2016 is 3,866 USD/ per person/ per year (equivalent to around 86.8 million VND per person/ per year), up to 35.2% compared to 2015. The average wage of employees in IT services (except for selling and distributing) in 2016 is 5,609 USD/ per person/ per year (equivalent to around 126 million VND per person/ per year), up to 4.33% compared to 2015. For the digital content industry, the average wage of employees in 2016 is 6,189 USD/ per person/ per year (equivalent to around 139 million VND per person/ per year), up to 1.1% compared to 2015.

The Ministry of Information & Communications said, IT industry sector is developing with a rapid growth rate and in sustainable way, high revenue and export value, which contributes significantly to the national GDP growth. The total number of IT enterprises in Vietnam in 2016 is 24,501 enterprises, up to 13.13% compared to 2015.

The total revenue in IT industry sector in 2016 is estimated of 67.6 billion USD, up to 11.49% compared to 2015. In which, revenue from hardware industry is 58.8 billion USD; software industry is 3 billion USD; digital content industry is 739 million USD; and IT services (except for selling and distributing) is 5 billion USD.

IT export value is 60.7 billion USD, in which hardware is 57.7 billion USD and software is 2.4 billion USD. The total revenue contributing to state budget is more than 34 trillion VND, equivalent to 3.4% of the total state budget. Comparing to the automobile industry, in 2016, importing complete built – in units (CBU) is 2.3 billion USD and car accessories is 1.4 billion USD, so the total is 3.7 billion USD. As a result, the revenue of IT industry sector is more than 20 times of the automobile industry.

Statistics from the ICT Vietnam White book 2017 also shows, the number of employees in IT industry continues to grow in 2016. Specifically, the total number of employees in IT industry in 2016 is 780,926 people, up to 8.2% compared to 2015. In which, the number of employees in hardware industry is 568,200 people, contributing to 72.6% of the total workforce in IT industry; software industry has 97,300 people; digital content has 46,600 people; and in IT services (except for selling and distributing) is more than 68,600 people. 
With regard to training the human resources for IT industry, the number of universities and colleges offering degrees on IT, telecommunications, information security in 2016 is 250 education insitutions, with the total number of students is more than 68,000 people. 

However, in reality, the rate of recruitment in universities and colleges is 77.12%, while the graduation rate in IT industry is 93.88%. For vocational schools, Vietnam has 164 schools offering training on IT, telecommunications and information security, with the total students of 18,311 people, the rate of recruitment is 68.27%, while the graduation rate in IT industry is 52.4%.
