Initiatives on developing craft village tourism should have scientific connection
In recent years, the number of visitors to Bat Trang for visiting and purchasing was estimated at 200,000 visitors per year.
Initiatives on developing tourism in Hanoi's Bat Trang Ceramic Village should have a scientific connection to create favorable conditions for visitors.
The information was announced by Director of the Paris-based Agency for International Cooperation in Vietnam Emmanuel Cerise during a survey to the Bat Trang Ceramic Village and a working session between the Hanoi Department of Tourism and the Gia Lam district People's Committee on October 24.
Appeal to visitors
According to Chairman of the People's Committee of Gia Lam district Le Anh Quan, the Bat Trang Ceramic Village is known as a sacred area with 9 valuable historical, cultural and architectural relics, two revolutionary relics associated with Uncle Ho and is the place where music composer Van Cao first printed the song “Tien quan ca”, which later became the country's national anthem.
Bat Trang commune has nearly 1,000 households producing and trading ceramics. Its per capita income in 2018 is more than VND50 million (US$2,150) per year.
In recent years, the number of visitors to Bat Trang for visiting and purchasing is estimated at 200,000 visitors per year, of which international visitors account for about 10%, and students and young people about 40%. Especially, in the peak season, Bat Trang may welcome nearly 10,000 visitors per day. Accordingly, Bat Trang is an attractive destination for both domestic and international visitors.
To develop tourism in Bat Trang commune, the Gia Lam district People's Committee will take initiative in cooperating with the Hanoi Department of Tourism to promote tourism products of the village with over 30 travel companies in Hanoi.
“Particularly, during recent time, Gia Lam district has coordinated with the Hanoi Department of Tourism to carry out the 360 degree photo to introduce Gia Lam tourism destinations in general and Bat Trang in particular on the portal of the Hanoi Department of Tourism”, said Chairman of the Gia Lam district People's Committee Le Anh Quan.
Need for scientific cooperation
In recent years, tourism in the Bat Trang Ceramic Village has achieved many positive results but there are still many limitations to be overcome. About this issue, Director of the Paris-based Agency for International Cooperation in Vietnam Emmanuel Cerise said that Bat Trang has more advantages for tourism development than other craft villages in Hanoi. However, the initiatives on developing tourism in Bat Trang in recent years are still separated and lacking of scientific connection.
“The quality of products sold at tourist destinations is always paid attention to by the international visitors. Therefore, from my opinion, visiting directly and experiencing the whole process of ceramic production can be a solution to help the Bat Trang Ceramic Village to attract more international visitors in the future”, said Emmanuel Cerise.
Besides, some travel companies’ representatives shared that the lack of information guidance center about the destinations makes Bat Trang gradually lose attractiveness to visitors. In addition, together with the promotion of Bat Trang ceramic products, Gia Lam district in general and Bat Trang commune in particular should focus on promoting its cuisine, as cuisine is always accompanied with each locality’s traditional culture.
The travel companies’ representatives also advised that in order to set up special tourism promotion programs for Bat Trang, the local authorities and people should increase accommodation choices, add websites or specific applications for visitors to have more information of the craft village.
At the working day, Director of the Hanoi Department of Tourism Tran Duc Hai opined that based on recommendations from representatives of travel companies and local people, the department will develop a detailed plan for the development of craft villages tourism in general and Bat Trang in particular.
However, the craft village is a type of cultural tourism product with the subject being the business community and local people. Therefore, the localities are required to identify each specific task to have further development for craft village tourism.
