Japan’s biggest convenience store chain 7-Eleven confirmed on June 7 that it will open its first outlet in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) next Thursday.
In June, consumers in HCMC would have chance to be served by a powerful retail. According to Nikkei, 7-Eleven set target of 100 stores in 3 year and mark the 10th anniversary operation with 1000 stores in Japan.
The convenience store chain is promising to set itself apart by offering a wide range of take-away food. The first store will be located in the Saigon Trade Center Tower (District 1). 7-Eleven starts to approach Vietnam's market via a franchise agreement between the Japan-based Seven & i Holdings and Seven System Vietnam Joint Stock Company, a new firm founded by a Vietnamese restaurant chain.
7-Eleven also promises to bring a memorable summer with untold attractive activities and promotion programs when first open in Vietnam. Like many other convenience stores operating in Vietnam, the 7-Elevent outlet will offer essential products with a focus on young and average-income customers. To make it competitive, the store in HCMC will offer a menu of up to 100 dishes suitable for office workers who usually go out for lunch.
Vietnam is the 19th market of 7-Eleven. Vietnam’s trade ministry has projected the convenience store market could be worth $179 billion by 2020, an increase of 52% from last year, with foreign operators already holding 70% of the market share. The sector has a lot room to grow in Vietnam, given that half of the country's population of nearly 92 million is young and the annual average income, which was around $2,200 last year, is expected to increase rapidly. There are some warnings for this convinience store chain. Other domestic and foreign retail chains had great coverage and have deep knowledge of Vietnam’s market. Some potential rivals of 7-Eleven include Vinmart+, Shop&Go, Circle K, Ministop... Among those, Vinmart+ is the fiercest rival with system of 1.000 stores in national scale
7-Eleven defeated numerous convenience store chains to become the most successful one in worldwide history. At first, the chain derived from an enterprise in ice water business. By the end of 2016, it showed up in 17 nations with 61.500 stores all over the world.
