#IWTMEKONG - the short film competition on illegal wildlife trade has just been launched by the UK Government in cooperation with the Luang Prabang Film Festival, the World Wild Fund - WWF and the Wildlife Conservation Society.
The competition is to raise awareness about the need to protect endangered wildlife, reinforce wildlife conservation practices and the importance of generating long-term sustainable solutions in the Mekong region, the UK embassy in Hanoi said.
Filmmakers from Vietnam are invited to submit short films of up to 6 minutes as part of the regional competition. Filmmakers stand to win prizes of up to US$5,000 for the best films and winners of the competition will be invited to present their films at the London Conference on Illegal Wildlife Trade (IWT) in October this year and at the Luang Prabang Film Festival in December 2018.
As youth are one of the most important groups able to enact change, the organisers have created a separate section of this activity meant for students. Because submitting a film to a competition with professional filmmakers can be intimidating, students currently enrolled in undergraduate college and below are able to compete against their peers for a Student Prize.
With Vietnam having been the host of the 2016 IWT Conference and with the country having a prominent role at the conference in London this year, we are keen to have as many applications as possible from within Vietnam
