More Vietnamese people get artificial limbs from India program
Indian Vice President Venkaiah Naidu attended an inaugural ceremony of the new Jaipur Foot Artificial Limb Fitment Camps in the northern provinces of Quang Ninh and Yen Bai in Hanoi on May 11.
On the inaugural ceremony of the new Jaipur Foot Artificial Limb Fitment Camps, six Vietnamese people with disabilities received surgery to attach artificial limbs.
The event was held within the framework of Indian Vice President Venkaiah Naidu’s official visit to Vietnam from May 9 to 12 and to attend the 2019 United Nations Day of Vesak, at the invitation of Vice President Dang Thi Ngoc Thinh.
Speaking at a ceremony, Indian Vice President Venkaiah Naidu hoped that more ideas for cooperation will be implemented in the coming time, thereby promoting the friendship and cooperation between the governments and people of India and Vietnam.
The Jaipur Foot, also known as the Jaipur Leg, is a rubber-based prosthetic leg for people with below-knee amputations. It is inexpensive and widely acceptable as prosthesis, and as a result has been widely used in India. The government of India supports Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang Sahayata Samiti (BMVSS), a Jaipur-based non-profit organization, with financial aid to carry out the work done by the organization. The Jaipur Foot has helped many people overcome their disabilities.
The joint statement issued during the state visit of President Tran Dai Quang to India in March 2018, the embassy of India organized camps for humanitarian assistance in the form of artificial limbs in Vinh Phuc and Phu Tho provinces in association with Bhagwan Mahavir Viklang Sahayta Samiti (BMVSS) of India.
After the successful program in 2018, this year, BMVSS with the support of the Ministry of External Affairs, the government of India and the Departments of Foreign Affairs of Quang Ninh and Yen Bai provinces have proposed organizing artificial limb fitment camp under ‘India for Humanity’ scheme in commemoration of 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. Approximately 500 Vietnamese beneficiaries will benefit from this camp.
