New bridge over Red River opens to traffic

Vinh Tuy Bridge, the biggest spanning Red River, will help ease the traffic volume entering and leaving Hanoi.

Hanoi today inaugurated the Vinh Tuy Bridge – Phase 2, which crosses the Red River and connects the city’s downtown with the north and northeast.

Once it becomes operational, the VND2.5 trillion (US$105 million) bridge will ease traffic volume in the city of 10 million people.

The 3,500-meter-long and 19.25-meter-wide bridge is made of reinforced concrete, which can withstand a magnitude 8 earthquake. It becomes the widest bridge crossing the Red River.

Deputy Chairman of the Hanoi People’s Committee Duong Duc Tuan said the Vinh Tuy Bridge project is important for Hanoi as the city is a special urban area with high population density and increasing traffic volume.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, Secretary of Hanoi Party Committee Dinh Tien Dung, Deputy Secretary of Hanoi Party Committee Nguyen Thi Tuyen, Chairman of Hanoi People’s Committee Tran Sy Thanh, and Chairman of Hanoi People’s Council Nguyen Ngoc Tuan.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh said Vinh Tuy – Phase 2 is one of Hanoi’s key transport works in the city’s strategy to strengthen transportation infrastructure by 2030 and a vision for 2050.
