New strategy for Japan, Mekong cooperation

Japan and four Southeast Asian nations along the Mekong River Basin – Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar and Thailand – have approved a plan to speed up industrial development in the region.

Themed ‘Mekong Industrial Development Vision’ the roadmap was approved on August 24 at a meeting between Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Yoichi Miyazawa and his counterparts from the other nations on the side-lines of the 47th ASEAN Economic Ministers (AEM) Meeting.

The blueprint also provides for a series of policies and orientations pertaining to border trade, the development of a Special Economic Zone and co-ordination among universities and industry to enhance skilled workers and strengthen research and development.
Under the plan through 2020, a working agenda along with a concrete timetable will be established for the next AEM Meeting in 2016 coordinated with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the Japan External Trade Organisation (JETO) and Asian Development Bank (ADB).
