Non Nuoc Cao Bang Geopark receives UNESCO recognition
Cao Bang province also made public the recognition of 1950 Border Victory battle field as a national special historical site on this occasion.
A ceremony to receive the UNESCO recognition of Non Nuoc Cao Bang Geopark as a global geopark was held by Cao Bang provincial People's Committee on November 24.
The park was recognized by the UNESCO Global Geoparks Council in Paris on April 12, the second in Vietnam. In 2010, Dong Van Stone Plateau in Ha Giang province was recognized as a member of the Global Network of National Geoparks (GGN) and became Vietnam’s first geological park and the second in Southeast Asia, after the Langkawi in Malaysia.
Non Nuoc Cao Bang, about 300 km to the north of Hanoi capital city, is home to fossils, ocean sediment, volcanic rocks, minerals, and especially karst landscapes, which can give researchers an insight into an over-500-million-year history of the Earth. It is also well known for rich biodiversity and many indigenous fauna and flora species. The geopark has more than 200 cultural and historical relics, with three certified Vietnam’s special national site.
On this occasion, Cao Bang province also made public the recognition of 1950 Border Victory battle field in Thach An district as a national special historical site. The victory marked an important turning point in the anti-French national resistance, leading to the final victory of Dien Bien Phu in 1954.
Addressing the ceremony, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc emphasized that the Non Nuoc Cao Bang Geopark recognition by UNESCO could enhance the provincial preservation work and promotion of geological heritages, biodiversity, and cultural identity.
In honoring UNESCO recognition, Cao Bang province is hosting a tourism program featuring sports activities, food, and handicraft products to highlight the heritages of Vietnam’s northern region.
