In response to the national movement to join hands supporting the poor, the Vietnam Fatherland Front Central Committee held a ceremony in Hanoi on October 17 to launch the “Month for the Poor”, which will run until November 18.
Addressing the event, Vietnam Fatherland Front (VFF) Central Committee President Nguyen Thien Nhan noted that since the programme was set up in 2010, the “Fund for the Poor” has received 11.45 trillion VND (515.25 million VND) and mobilised over 31 trillion VND for social welfare programmes, contributing to the country’s social stability.
Under the old poverty line, as of 2015, the proportion of poor households was 4.25 percent, a sharp drop from 14.2 percent in 2010. During the 2011-2015 period, the ratio declined 2 percent each year averagely and 6 percent in poor districts.
Meanwhile, average per capita income of poor households increased 1.6 times over that in 2011, while the rise was 2.5 times for those in extremely difficult and mountainous areas.
In the period, nearly 47.34 trillion VND was poured into the national target programme for sustainable poverty reduction, which has helped improved the living conditions for the poor as well as the infrastructure system in poor localities.
VFF President Nguyen Thien Nhan called on organisations and individuals at home and abroad to continue support for poor people, especially those affected by natural calamities, to help them overcome difficulties and escape poverty.
Speaking at the event, Deputy Prime Minister Vuong Dinh Hue said that multidimentional sustainable poverty reduction is one of the key policies of the Party and State.
The Deputy Prime Minister affirmed that this is not only an economic issue but also a condition to ensure political and social stability, national defence and security.
The Party and State always pursue a strategy of developing economy in conjunction with social progress and equality, thus narrowing the gap between the rich and the poor, Hue added.
According to multidimensional poverty line of Vietnam for the 2016-2020 period, Vietnam has more than 2.33 million poor households, accounting for 9.88 percent of total households nationwide, along with 1.23 million others close to the line.
A number of policies have been designed to mobilise resources to help the poor get rid of poverty, including a national target programme of sustainable poverty reduction for the 2016-2020 period that was approved by the Prime Minister in early September 2016.-
During the launching ceremony, Deputy Minister of of Information and Communications Hoang Vinh Bao called for the text-message campaign from October 15 to November 30 to raise fund for the poor at website 1400.vn or through telephone centre 19001530.
At the ceremony, organisations and enterprises pledged to donate over 348 billion VND (15.6 million USD) to the fund for the poor.
