Party leader continues to meet Japanese senior officials

Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong is on a four-day official visit to Japan on September 15-18 at the invitation of Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. He on September 17 met Speaker of House of Representatives Oshima Tadamori, Chairman of the Japanese Communist Party, Kazuo Shii and President of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Tanaka Akihito.

Receiving leaders of Keidanren (Japan Business Federation) in Tokyo on the same day, Trong applauded the federation’s valuable support for Vietnam over the past two decades and its important role in promoting economic, trade and investment ties between the two countries. ​The leader witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the two communist parties.

Japan - a leading economic partner of Vietnam and top ODA donor for the country - ranks second among foreign investors in the country and fourth in terms of bilateral trade turnover, Trong said. He highlighted great cooperative potential, saying that signing a series of free trade agreements between Vietnam and other countries will open new cooperative opportunities for businesses.

The guest said he is glad to see the Vietnam - Japan relations growing steadily in a broad range of fields such as politics, economics, culture, education- training under the framework of extensive strategic partnership for peace and prosperity in Asia. Trong said he hopes that Keidanren will bring into full play what it has achieved over recent years as a further contribution to enhancing and developing broader cooperation with Vietnam.

Keidanren Vice President Hitoshi Ogita echoed Trong’s view as saying that Japan-Vietnam relations were based on mutual trust in politics, economics, and culture in which bilateral economic cooperation sees strong growth with Japan having injected US$37.3 billion into Vietnam and becoming the fourth largest trade partner of the country.

As a vast 90 million consumption market, Vietnam is considered an important gateway for Japan to enter ASEAN, the Keidanren President said while affirming his organization’s active participation in dialogues and policy consultation to help improve the investment environment in Vietnam and provide human resources training for the country
