Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong on August 22 had a meeting with a delegation of diplomats representing more than 2,000 former officials throughout different periods and nearly 2,400 incumbent ones on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the diplomatic sector (August 28).
Highlighting the role and special significant of the sector throughout the history, he hailed the important contributions that diplomats have made to the revolution and the nation, bringing Vietnam closer to the world.
During the seven decades of development, the sector has formed a strong force with well-trained, active and highly-competent officials, he noted.
He urged the sector to further promote its role in the current national construction and defence.
The Party and State always pay much attention to and create all favourable condition for the sector to fulfil its tasks.
Speaking at the meeting, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh said the leadership of the Party as well as the Ho Chi Minh Thought on diplomacy is a decisive factor for the diplomatic sector’s achievements over the past 70 years.
From the success of the Geneva Agreement in 1954 and the Paris Agreement in 1973, the country has now expanded foreign relations, strategic and comprehensive partnership with neighbouring countries as well as important states in the world, he noted.
The attainments have also helped speed up the country’s international integration and build an environment of peace for national development and safeguard the national territorial sovereignty, stated Minh.
