PM Phuc attended Vietnam ICT Summit 2016
On September 24, PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc called for a revolution in information technology application while addressing the Vietnam Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Summit 2016.
Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc said that the government is determined to grasp opportunities from the fourth industrial revolution and develop Vietnam into an IT power. Of the countless challenges that Vietnam faces today, perhaps the most overpowering is how to shape the Fourth Industrial Revolution that began at the turn of the century, he stressed.
Themed “The Digital Revolution – Opportunities and Challenges”, the annual policy and business networking forum of national scale was held by the Vietnam Software and IT Services Association (Vinasa) under the auspices of the Ministry of Information and Communications (MoIC).
The event attracted more than 500 delegates from ministries, agencies, localities and businesses at home and abroad. PM Phuc noted that this year, Vietnam moved up 10 spots from 2015 to the 89 th out of 193 countries in terms of e-government development.
The country has also attracted many IT giants such as IBM, Microsoft, Intel, Toshiba and Samsung, while many domestic IT firms such as Viettel, FPT and VNPT have been known in many parts of the world. The PM called for more drastic and effective actions to improve national competitiveness, and suggested building Vietnam into a world centre for software industry, mobile applications and information security services.
Ministries and agencies were asked to improve IT workforce in quantity and quality so as to provide high-quality manpower for the world digital economy. He expressed hope that smart city models will be built in major cities and provinces of Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Hai Phong, Da Nang, Can Tho and Binh Duong. The MoIC and Vinasa will collect suggestions at the Vietnam ICT Summit to submit to the PM for consideration. The event was divided into four thematic discussions on building a start-up nation, the trends of Internet of Things (IoT) and Smart City, IT infrastructure development, and cyber security and IT human resources.
PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc asked for drastic and effective actions in order to create a revolution in information technology (IT) application as a new development method for sharpening national competitiveness. The participants to this year’s summit will focus discussions on innovation and national startup, IT infrastructure development, Internet connection trends, and human resource development. The aforesaid topics are the Government’s top priorities, said PM Phuc, adding that the country is striving to become an international software hub. He took the occasion to name some key tasks that the Government will focus on in the coming time:
Firstly, it is necessary to accelerate the application of IT, high and digital technologies in all socio-economic development fields, enhance IT application in reforming institutions, laws, administrative procedures and; sharpening competitiveness and developing e-Government so as to promote transparency, accountability and facilitate access to public services.
Secondly, foster scientific and technological innovation, strengthen the capacity to absorb and master technologies, especially new digital ones, and develop the ICT industry so that Viet Nam could become a software hub of the world.
Thirdly, PM Phuc highlighted the importance of beefing up innovation to turn Viet Nam into a startup nation with a focus on developing high-tech businesses and create breakthroughs in digital economy development.
Fourthly, the Government will promote the development of digital human resources that meet international standards and take advantages of the golden population period in the context of the country’s wide and deep international integration.
Fifthly, the country will gradually develop smart cities, focusing on large ones such as Ha Noi, Ho Chi Minh City, Hai Phong, Da Nang, Can Tho and Binh Duong Province.
Sixthly, the PM requested ministries, agencies, localities, businesses and the whole society to increase their awareness of the digital revolution while drastically stepping up ICT application to enhance their performance.
In conclusion, the PM challenged those in attendance to seize the opportunities presented by the Industrial Revolution, stressing importance of IT revolution as new development method.
