On October 26, PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc chaired a press conference on the outcomes of the World Economic Forum on the Mekong region (WEF-Mekong), the 8th Summit of Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Viet Nam (CLMV 8) and the 7th Summit of Ayeyawady-Chao Phraya-Mekong Economic Cooperation Strategy (ACMECS 7).
The PM highlighted the success of these events, which have proposed new guidelines and measures for such issues as green growth, overall growth, striving to establish a society heading to people and responding to climate change in the region.
Economic connectivity is key to the Mekong Region's development
The World Economic Forum on the Mekong (WEF-Mekong), themed “Greater Mekong Subregion Development: Investment in infrastructure, human resources and connectivity”, stressed that Vietnam is making every effort in restructuring the national economy and reforming its growth model while proactively and actively integrating into the world, citing the country’s constructive engagement in negotiations, signing and implementation of many free trade agreements.
The WEF-Mekong, initiated by Vietnam, is expected to offer new cooperation opportunities for leading firms in the region and the world, thereby helping to attract capital for infrastructure development and connectivity enhancement in the Mekong region. This is the first time WEF has held a separate forum on the Mekong region, reflecting the interest of its member corporations in the region’s potentials.
The Vietnamese Government will continue to improve investment and business climate for enterprises in and outside the region, and step up public-private partnerships for sustainable development of the country and the region at large. The formation of the ASEAN Community in late 2015 and the development of transport corridors in the sub-regions plus regional economic links are opening opportunities for businesses and investors.
CLMV 8 summit looks to seize opportunities, shape future
At CLMV 8, themed “Seize Opportunities, Shape the Future”, the participating leaders shared the view that the CLMV countries are holding many big economic development chances which come from the global science-technology revolution, the region’s strong economic integration, and the formation of the ASEAN Economic Community.
They also boast a number of important competitive edges like the location in close proximity to major markets, rich natural resources, abundant and young workforce, and favourable trade and investment policies. The leaders also pointed to the challenges facing the Mekong Region, including limited human resources, underdeveloped infrastructure, climate change impacts, regional and global economic instability, and small, open economies’ vulnerability.
The participants endorsed the economic ministers’ plan to develop a framework for CLMV development which aims at advancing economic development, enhancing the capacity to reap the benefits arising from regional integration, and raising the living standards of our people. They will facilitate the participation of CLMV tourism agencies, associations and enterprises in the regional events and fairs, while promoting public – private partnerships, particularly in tourism promotion activities and tourist product development.
ACMECS 7 looks to dynamic, prosperous Mekong sub-region
The 7th Ayeyawady-Chao Phraya-Mekong Economic Cooperation Strategy Summit (ACMECS 7) adopted the Hanoi Declaration seeking to turn the Mekong region into an economic centre with dynamism and sustainable development.
Participating leaders discussed measures to spur socio-economic development, improve the competitiveness of the economies and increase regional economic integration. They also outlined cooperation orientations to ensure sustainable development in the Mekong Region.
Speaking at the summit, PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc underscored major priorities in ACMECS’s future cooperation, including increasingly connecting ACMECS economies; promoting links between ACMECS and ASEAN as well as other partnership mechanisms in the region; fostering coordination in improving competitiveness and international integration; and collaborating to cope with climate change and protect the environment.
The PM proposed bolstering connectivity between ACMECS and other trans-national transportation routes through developing multimode transportation, turning transport corridors into economic corridors in parallel with the formation of industrial production and service chains. He also stressed the need to integrate ACMECS programmes and projects into the ASEAN action plans and regional cooperation in order to optimise resources for development.
Regarding cooperation in environmental protection and climate change response, he recommended that ACMECS countries apply four major solutions of increasing cooperation in management and sustainable use of natural resources, including the shared water resource, as well as encouraging the exchange of information on climate change.
The initiative helps forge stronger connectivity among businesses in the Mekong region as well as with major economic groups in the world, while increasing dialogue between the business circle and policy makers, and boosting the engagement of development partners in CLMV and ACMECS cooperation programmes.
