Prime Minister Phuc congratulated Victoria Kwakwa on assuming her new post while meeting the WB official in Hanoi. The PM said he hopes Victoria Kwakwa will continue to help Vietnam with infrastructure and renewable energy development as well as land database and educational cooperation project.
As one of the countries hardest hit by climate change, Vietnam wants to receive WB assistance to enable it to cope with this phenomenon in both short and long terms, Phuc told his guest. The cabinet leader called for the WB to maintain its ODA provision to help Vietnam alleviate difficulties during the economic development process.
During the meeting, both sides also discussed measures to respond to drought in the central and Central Highlands region and saline intrusion in the Mekong Delta.
Victoria Kwakwa affirmed the WB's willingness to help Vietnam access preferential loans to develop renewable energy in order to reduce negative impacts of climate change, which is part of the country’s commitments at the 21st Conference of the Parties (COP21) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.
Vietnam is one of the five nations to receive the priority to implement the programme, she said, adding that her organization is ready to continue assisting Vietnam in restructuring debts, and addressing pressures and burdens on the State budget.
The PM expressed his hope that Ms. Victoria Kwakwa will make crucial contributions to maintaining and enhancing the relations between Viet Nam and the WB in her newly-appointed position as WB Regional Vice President for East Asia. He hoped that the WB will provide more assistance for Viet Nam to take full advantage of new Free Trade Agreements (FTA) to promote sustainable socio-economic development.
Ms. Victoria Kwakwa hailed the PM’s active activities in advocating the private sector and assisting businesses in overcoming obstacles to stabilize their operations, confirming that the WB always supports Viet Nam to enhance the relations between the two sides and tackle difficulties and challenges.
The WB is willing to help Viet Nam get access to preferential capital for developing renewable energy, reducing consequences of climate change and realizing Viet Nam’s commitments at the Paris climate conference (COP21).
