State and Government leaders meet WB Vice President

The World Bank (WB) congratulated Vietnam on the high-level attention to building resilience of vulnerable areas like the Mekong Delta – which are especially impacted by climate change and disaster risks.

It also commended Vietnam’s green growth strategy and action plan, urging the country to forge ahead on a low carbon and resilient growth path.

World Bank (WB) Group Vice President & Special Envoy in charge of Climate Change, Rachel Kyte made the statement while meeting with State President Truong Tan Sang, and Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung in Hanoi on August 25.

Climate change is a fact. It is intensifying threats to development and growth and there is no benefit in delaying action. Vietnam's leadership in climate action, green growth and building resilience is widely recognized," said Rachel Kyte. "Moreover, Vietnam recognizes the need to coordinate climate action at the highest level and we look forward to continuing to work together to tackle the climate challenge.”

At a meeting with State President Truong Tan Sang, Rachel stated that the WB will continue to give priority to Vietnam both in the short-term and long-term.

She said that the fact-finding tour of Mekong Delta region helped her gain a better understanding about how local people live under climate change impacts and affirmed that the WB will further support Vietnam in coping with climate change effectively.

She appreciated Vietnam’s commitment to promoting green growth and the State President’s attention to this issue.

President Sang thanked the WB for its support of Vietnam’s climate change mitigation and adaptation and fulfilling millennium development goals (MDGs).

Climate change is more adversely affecting the living space of citizens in the Mekong Delta region and agreed there should be a competent steering  agency .Vietnam needs support from the WB in studying solutions for large-scale mangrove forestation, building sea dyke systems to protect inland areas and improving forecast capacity and public awareness of the negative impacts of climate change, Sang said.
