Teaching in context of industrial revolution 4.0

Teaching in industrial revolution 4.0 is facing numerous challenges.

Students at the Hanoi National University of Education.
Former Principal of the University of Education under Vietnam National University – Assoc. Prof. Dr. Le Kim Long has discussed this topic with the Economic & Urban Newspaper.

How does the industrial revolution 4.0 impact teachers?

The nature of industrial revolution 4.0 is the connection. The development of internet has helped to connect the whole Vietnam education system. Teachers and students can easily refer to good teaching materials for sharing and utilize into practice. However, teachers must pay attention and use its impact to take advantage of strengths and reduce the negative influence based on the transparency and seriousness.

How do we train teachers and based on what criteria?

Requirements for graduation at universities and colleges, including the teacher training program have been requested to publish since 2010 by the Ministry of Education & Training, however this request was not taken seriously. The Ministry of Education & Training has announced the requirements for teachers, which is being implemented for 7 years but not so effective. Therefore, it is necessary to develop and announce immediately requirements for teachers. After that, we should have specific requirements for newly graduated teacher (5 - 10 years), skilled teacher (10 – 20 years) and outstanding teacher with big influence in education system. The Ministry of Internal Affairs has regulation on ranking and working position for teaching staffs. We should combine these regulations, so that teachers are motivated to improve in accordance with criteria and ranking.

How will the requirements for teachers be changed?

The former requirements and the new one will both mention teachers to have sufficient knowledge and qualification (experience and capabilities through examination, adaptability and working under pressure). The new teaching program focuses on developing students’ capabilities, which they have to practice to improve. To do so, the teaching program must reduce the theory part.

Do teachers in industrial revolution 4.0 also have to have requirements for IT and language skills?

We are wasting many things. If teachers are required to have IT knowledge like experts, good language skills like language teachers, so when can they focus on knowledge improvement? I think, teacher needs to have solid knowledge and teach students how to absorb knowledge. Teacher with language capability can look for origin teaching materials in foreign language to use them for their teaching. While the IT knowledge is for teaching but not to “show-off”.

What are your recommendations for teachers nowadays?

From my point of view, allowances for teachers must be equal to other priority fields. However, the limited state budget and more than 1 million teachers are causing headache for administrative agencies. State budget for education is insufficient, which is partially spent from kindergarten to universities, so it is difficult to teachers to fully focus on their jobs. As such, the government need to have plans temporarily stop investing in university, at the same time developing policies dividing students after high school graduation, in which 40% go to vocational school. State budget for education should be invested from kindergarten to 9th grade. As such, each class will have around 20 – 30 students, teachers will have better salary, so that the teaching process will be improved and more efficient.

Thank you!
