Telecom expo scheduled for end-2008 in city

Telecomp 08, the biggest telecommunications and electronics exhibition of the year, will open in November in HCMC to create a platform for foreign and local enterprises to establish and expand business in the booming Vietnam ICT and electronics market.

The event is co-organized by the Vietnam Post and Communication Group (VNPT) and Hong Kong-based Adsale Exhibition Service Ltd, and is backed by the Ministry of Information and Communication. It will take place at the HCMC International Exhibition and Convention Center in Tan Binh District from November 26 to 29.
Broadband internet, third-generation (3G) mobile, Wimax and wireless communications innovations from France Orange, SK Telecom, Japan-based NTT DOCOMO, Qualcom, Samsung, China-based Huawie and Alcatel are expected to attract the most public attention.
Additionally, those 3G-enabling elements like mobile entertainment, multimedia and mobile value added service are also highlighted. Moreover, it will also showcase electronic components and accessories, home entertainment and appliances and other technologies.
Seminars focusing o­n market development and business opportunities in Vietnam's ICT market, communication technology, innovation, applications and convergence will be the main topics to discuss among experts and industry insiders.
Up to date, organizers have received attendance registers from seven countries and territories, including China, France, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan and Hong Kong. Aside from that, many local telecom and electronic companies will also participate.
Bui Quoc Viet, spokesman of VNPT, said at the press meeting in HCMC o­n Wednesday that the recent launch of Vietnam's first satellite Vinasat-1 into the orbit and the coming wave of 3G would speed up ICT development in the country.
Thus, the expo would highlight 3G network and service deployment plus satellite communication which would definitely capture the attention of both suppliers and end users in the country.
According to Viet, the local telecom sector has made a long stride in recent time, and the International Communication Union has said Vietnam is the most attractive telecom market in South East Asia and ranks second for the growth rate.
"It [the exhibition] demonstrates international firms' increasing interest in Vietnam's fast-growing telecommunications market," said Viet.
Last year, the event attracted 178 exhibitors from 17 countries and territories.
Last year, Vietnam had 18.5mil new telephone subscribers and 19mil broadband Internet users, accounting for 22.96% of the total population of 86mil people. It is estimated Internet users make up 35% of the population by 2010.
