After one year in operation, “Thang Long – Hanoi tourism support group” established by Hanoi Tourism Department has left good impression on domestic and foreign tourists, as well as bringing multi-benefits to the non-smog industry” said the Vice Director of Hanoi Department of Tourism Dang Huong Giang.
Ideal enviroment for practice
The Vice head of Hanoi tourism added that since 2016, more than 300 volunteers of “Thang Long – Hanoi tourism support group” has brought a breeze to the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long, the Temple of Literature, Hoan Kiem Lake, the Old Quarter, the night market and the Dong Xuan market, Hanoi outstanding attractions.
At present, the group consisting of 200 volunteers are mainly students coming from universities majoring in foreign languages and touirsm in Hanoi. These students all have good academic record, high resposibility and who are fluent in foreign languages. Once qualified for the group, the volunteers are trained on communication skills, working styles, basic knowledge about monuments, landscapes, and first aid measures for tourists in unexpected circumstances. They will then be assigned to work under the direct management of Hanoi Old Quarter Management Board.
Nguyen Hung Long, student at Hanoi Open University, a group member, said: ”everytime helping tourists, we are very happy and love our country even more. I hope the group can support more tourists in the future to promote Hanoi to the world. This is very useful and practical for us student majoring in tourism”. Deputy head of Tourism department at Hanoi Open University Vu An Dan stressed ”the establishment of “Thang Long – Hanoi torism support group” has created a practical environment for students stuyding tourism. This will help them to succeed in their careers, at the same time creating a highly qualified tourism workforce in the future”.
Special tourism ambassadors
As direct manager of “Thang Long – Hanoi tourism supporting group”, Kim Yen at Thang Long – Hanoi Heritage Conservation Center says, at every location, volunteers will be assigned with specific tasks as including explaining historical and cultural values of the monuments and landscapes, tourism professional support at sites, tour guiding, and keeping the environment clean. On the other hand, volunteers will have the opportunities to take part in tourism events such as: Festival tourism tradition villages Hanoi – Vietnam, Festival Ao Dai Hanoi. “Despite being a little shy at first when making contact with foreign tourists, as time goes by, the volunteers are becoming more experienced and confident. In a year time, the team has been very active in supporting Thang Long – Hanoi Heritage Conservation Center”,Yen said.
In reality, with enthusiasm and a hunger for knowledge, the volunteers have been creating a good impression with tourists coming to Hanoi. On the walking streets around Hoan Kiem Lake, local residents and visitors are strongly impressed with their activities to promote Hanoi’s culture and history through folk games like “o an quan”, jumping rope and bamboo jacks. “At the Temple of Literature, I asked a young man for the ticket office, and then he became my guide for free for the whole evening. He was very energetic and explained to me in details everything I asked. He also recommended other interesting places for me to visit and introduced to me volunteers in each location. It is wonderful that Hanoi has a team with hundreds of the same volunteers!,” said David Tay,a tourist from Singapore.
“Thang Long – Hanoi tourism support group” has been bringing multi-benefits for the industry without chimney when helps tackling the issue of lacking tour guide, promoting the image of a hospitable and friendly city, and increase efficiency in training human resources.
