Three people die from poisonous mushrooms

Three members of a family in the central province of Nghe An died a week after eating mushrooms picked from a local mountain.

According to the General Hospital of Nghe An Province, three of the four patients from Ky Son District who were hospitalized a week ago for mushroom poisoning died on Sunday and Monday. The remaining victim was also in critical conditions and the family took him home.

Doctors said the four victims are in the same family. They include Mr. Vu Ba Ky, 43, Vu Ba Bi, 42, Vu Ba So, 39 and Vu Ba Trung, 20.  They were brought to the hospital on May 13 with liver failure, renal failure, coagulopathy and exhaustion. Doctors determined that they were poisoned by mushrooms.

On Sunday, Trung died at the hospital. The next day So and Bi were brought home and died there. On Monday Ky was also brought home, in critical condition.

Relatives of the victims said that on May 12, Trung picked mushrooms from a local mountain. After eating the mushrooms, that night the four people had symptoms of poisoning. They were taken to a local hospital and then transferred to Nghe An Hospital.

In March seven people from the northern provinces of Thai Nguyen and Tuyen Quang also died from poisonous mushroom.
