US wishes to further promote comprehensive cooperation with Vietnam

PM Nguyen Tan Dung on May 28 in Ha Noi hosted a reception for US Senator Benjamin Cardin, Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on East Asian and Pacific Affairs who is on a working visit to Viet Nam.

US senator Benjamin Cardin has said that his country attached special importance to and wished to further promote comprehensive co-operation with Viet Nam, especially relations between the two parliaments.

Visiting Chairman of the East Asian and Pacific Affairs Subcommittee under the US Senate Committee on Foreign Relations Cardin made the statement during his meeting with National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung yesterday.
Hung described the visit as an active contribution to improving the implementation of agreements reached by the two nations in line with the spirit of their comprehensive partnership, and was in the interests of the two peoples as well as peace and development in the region and the world at large.
Regarding China's illegal placement of the Haiyang Shiyou-981 oil rig in Viet Nam's exclusive economic zone and continental shelf, he said that this was a serious violation of Viet Nam's sovereignty, sovereign rights and jurisdiction.
It also contravened international law, including the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and the Declaration of the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC), he said.
The action destabilised the East Sea situation and threatened maritime and air freight in international waters, stirring deep concerns among regional countries and menacing regional and global peace and security, he added.
Hung expressed his wish that Cardin and other US senators would continue to speak out and take action in support of Viet Nam to foster peace, security, cooperation and development in the Asia-Pacific region.
For his part, Cardin said the US Senate strongly opposed China's provocative act and hoped the parties concerned would solve the issue in line with international law.
At the meeting, the two sides also discussed measures to boost relations between the two countries and the two parliaments, including the establishment of an annual dialogue between the two legislatures.
On the occasion, Hung invited Cardin and other US congressmen to attend the 132nd Inter-Parliamentary Union Assembly scheduled for 2015 in Ha Noi.
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh received Chairman of the East Asian and Pacific Affairs Subcommittee under the US Senate Committee on Foreign Relations Benjamin Cardin yesterday.
Minh said it was now the right time for bilateral ties to strongly develop, so the US Congress should support and increase the exchange of delegations at all levels.
The US Congress should also suggest the US administration to continue opening the market for Vietnamese goods and reduce trade barriers, especially anti-dumping and anti-subsidy duties, while granting Viet Nam a flexible and preferential treatment in negotiations for the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) Agreement as committed, he added.
The US senator voiced his support for the efforts of the two countries to continue the effective implementation of their comprehensive partnership, and expressed his hope that Viet Nam and the US would soon conclude TPP negotiations along with other countries, describing it as an opportunity for them to open the market and renew their economic development models.
For his part, Senator Benjamin Cardin briefed the host leader of the outcomes of his talks with National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung and Deputy PM, FM Pham Binh Minh.
The US hopes to promote the comprehensive ties with Viet Nam for mutual development, said Mr. Benjamin Cardin.
