Ha Noi (VNA) – Viet Nam will set up a task force in charge of advancement and propagation of IPv6 (Internet Protocol, version 6) in an effort to catch up with the world trend.

Vice Minister of the Information and Communications Le Nam Thang said the IPv6 Task Force will be administered by the Ministry of Information and Communications with the participation of State agencies and businesses with networking infrastructure.

The Viet Nam Internet Network Information Centre (VNNIC) has warned local Internet service providers that the Internet would run out of address space with the original version of the Internet Protocol, known as IPv4, and recommended the deployment of IPv6 instead.

At its recent 29 th meeting, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) admitted that IPv4 addresses would be finished by 2009 or 2010.

VNNIC said it has developed a trial IPv6 networking at IPv6/32 and IPv6/48 addresses, and has so far received requests for IPv6 addresses from the Viet Nam Post and Telecommunication Group and the Quang Trung Software Park Development Company.

“If Viet Nam fails to deploy IPv6 quickly, it can be isolated as other countries have turned to IPv6,” VNNIC Vice Director Tran Minh Tan said.
