Vietnam aviation market to see fastest growth in Southeast Asia through 2030
Vietnam’s strong potential for commercial aviation development is driven by rapid passenger growth, expanding infrastructure, and increasing GDP.
THE HANOI TIMES — Vietnam is poised to become the fastest-growing aviation market in Southeast Asia from 2025 to 2030, with annual passenger traffic projected to rise by 8.1%, according to Boeing’s 2025 Commercial Market Outlook (CMO) report.
At a press briefing on the CMO report held in Hanoi on April 24, Dave Schulte, Managing Director of Boeing Commercial Marketing for Asia-Pacific, said Vietnam's air passenger traffic could double in the next decade to more than 75 million passengers annually.

He highlighted Vietnam's strong potential for commercial aviation development, citing expected growth in GDP and industrial production as key drivers. "Vietnam is the fastest-growing aviation market in Southeast Asia, with GDP expected to grow by one-third and industrial production by 5% annually through 2029. These are strong foundations for aviation growth," said Schulte.
He expressed optimism about Boeing’s growing footprint in Vietnam, highlighting 737 MAX orders from Vietjet and Vietnam Airlines. The fuel-efficient 737 MAX suits the country’s busy domestic and regional routes, while wide-body jets like the 787 Dreamliner and 777X are expected to meet long-haul demand, especially to Europe and North America.
Schulte also pointed to Vietnam's expanding airport infrastructure as a key catalyst for growth. The upcoming opening of Terminal 3 at Ho Chi Minh City's Tan Son Nhat International Airport and the future launch of Long Thanh International Airport in Dong Nai Province will be important milestones paving the way for further expansion in the aviation sector.

Existing orders for the 737 MAX from Vietjet Air and Vietnam Airlines are clear indicators of the market's upward trajectory.
The CMO report forecast that Southeast Asia will need more than 4,720 new aircraft by 2043, with single-aisle jets like the 737 MAX accounting for 80% of that demand. In addition, the region is expected to need more than 120 new or converted freighters to meet growing cargo demand.
As the fleet expands, the demand for skilled aviation personnel will increase dramatically. Boeing estimates that Southeast Asia will need 234,000 new aviation workers, including pilots, maintenance technicians and cabin crew, by 2043, tripling the current workforce.
The US firm maintains a growing presence in Vietnam across commercial aviation, defense, technical training, community support, and supply chain cooperation. Currently, five Vietnamese suppliers are involved in its global production, contributing aircraft structures, electronics and composites.
