Vietnam consults BCG and Arup on National Innovation Center

Vietnam’s National Innovation Center will be the first center in the system of innovation centers.

Vietnam’s Ministry of Planning and Investment has invited Boston Consulting Group (BCG) and Arup Architecture Company to be consultant partners in a scheme to establish the National Innovation Center (NIC).

This was mentioned at the meeting on March 4 between Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc, Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam and leaders of some ministries and international consultants on establishing the NIC.

Speaking at the meeting, the consultants said that Vietnam has advantages over many countries in the region because of the country’s stock of young talent such as the software engineers working in Singapore or the United States.

Therefore, along with NIC establishment, it is necessary to take measures to draw talented people back to Vietnam. The NIC is not just a working space, but a symbol of innovation, a better ecosystem than that of neighboring countries.

Based on the possible success of the NIC, experts said that it is necessary to create a network of centers across the country and the industries.

With five priority fields namely smart factory, digital content, network security, smart city, environmental technology, the center is expected to become the nucleus for promoting Vietnam's economic development in the long term.

At the meeting, Minister of Planning and Investment Nguyen Chi Dung expected that the NIC will be associated with the change of the economic growth model of our country. This will be the first center in the system of innovation centers. It will not be subsidized with the state budget but rather mobilizes social resources. Currently, many domestic enterprises have expressed interest in the NIC.

For his part, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc applauded and appreciated the Ministry of Planning and Investment and the consultants who came up with the idea of building the NIC. He agreed with the ministries and experts that this is a pilot center and if successful, it can be replicated into many other centers.

The PM affirmed that the Vietnamese government will do its best to support the NIC, because without innovation, without science and technology, it is impossible to take advantage of opportunities coming up.
