Vietnam establishes National Innovation Center to bolster economic development

These innovation centers will not only be a place to promote the introduction of technology into economic development but also become a place to create new technologies in Vietnam.

The establishment of the National Innovation Center (NIC) is key for promoting economic development based on science, technology, and innovation, Minister of Planning and Investment Nguyen Chi Dung said at a conference in Hanoi on December 21.

Minister Dung emphasized that the Industrial Revolution 4.0 is fundamentally changing different industries and posing challenges for countries to adapt and address negative effects on the economy.

The world has had many successful lessons in building a creative innovation center with huge economic impact such as the ones in Beijing (China), in Seoul (South Korea) or CyberSpark at Beer Sheva (Israel).

The center must be a place with good business environment and competitive policies to attract companies to locate their offices as well as attract talents. In addition, the center needs to be a place where companies of different sizes can access the necessary resources (such as talent, capital or critical infrastructure) as well as market access.

In Vietnam, the NIC will be located in the Red River Delta, where the economic scale makes up over a quarter of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP), and which can create a positive impact on Vietnam’s economy that is going in the right track.

There are four fields that the center can choose to focus on, including an innovative kernel for smart manufacturing, a new venue for promoting digital media, especially digital games (digital games), a place to develop network security applications for government agencies, companies or individuals.

According to consultants, the NIC will be the first center and part of the network of innovative innovation centers that will be set up throughout the country. Each innovation center will focus on a number of specific areas. They will not only be a place to promote the introduction of technology into production but also become a place to create new technologies in Vietnam.

However, the economic shift to rely more on science and technology will be a long and difficult process. Therefore, it requires the coordination and support of many ministries, departments and agencies as well as companies, communities, educational institutions, investors, the consultants added.
