Vietnam officials unanimously propose Party chief as presidential candidate

This would be the second time in Vietnam’s modern history a leader will hold the two highest positions in the country.

The Central Committee (CC) of the Communist Party of Vietnam has proposed General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong as the sole candidate for the state president position with absolute majority, the Vietnam News Agency has announced.

The candidate will be subject to a vote at the National Assembly plenum which is set to start on October 22.

Over 200 delegates, including 176 official CC members and 20 alternate members, are gathering at a party plenum to discuss a wide range of vital issues, including the socio-economic development plan for 2019, disciplinary measures against corrupt officials, among others.

President Tran Dai Quang passed away on September 21 at the age of 61 due to a “serious illness”. Vice President Dang Thi Ngoc Thinh was appointed to Acting President, becoming the first female head of state in Vietnam.

Ho Chi Minh, the founding father of the nation, was the first leader in Vietnam to hold both party chief and president positions.
