Vietnam blocks over 52,000 spam calls in four months

The number of unwanted blocked showed the determination of telecom carriers and regulators in preventing junk calls and messages in the time ahead.

From July to October 2020, Vietnam’s telecom carriers stopped 52,124 spam calls, according to the Department of Telecommunications under the Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC).

In October 2020 alone, the total number of spam calls that were stopped reached 17,507. Among them, Viettel avoided 9,810 spam calls, followed by VNPT, MobiFone, and I Telecom which stopped 6,197, 833, and 667 calls, respectively.

The number of blocked calls shows the determination of telecom carriers and regulators in preventing junk calls and messages in the time ahead.

From July 1, 2020, the Department of Telecommunications cooperated with Viettel, VNPT and MobiFone to deploy a technology solution to screen the calls and cancel subscription of spammers.

Telecommunication enterprises in Vietnam have also launched a roadmap to take measures to handle junk calls.

Currently, they use big data or machine learning technology to identify subscribers who are suspected of spreading spam calls, thereby taking measures to prevent them.

Besides, from October, mobile subscribers can register with the Department of Information Security to be added to the 'Do Not Call' list to avoid being spammed.

This is also the basis for the authorities to deal with individuals and organizations who intentionally send spam messages and advertising calls.
