Vietnam, Qualcomm boost cooperation for 5G development
Qualcomm has developed cooperation with Vietnamese giants such as Viettel, VNPT, MobiFone, BKAV, and VinFast.
Vietnam has asked the world’s leading wireless technology innovator Qualcomm to boost cooperation in developing 5G infrastructure and eying 6G.

Qualcomm is expected to build criteria and test for 5G facilities and support Vietnam’s universities in a training post and telecommunication engineers, Minister of Information and Communications (MIC) Nguyen Manh Hung told Alex Rogers, President of Qualcomm Technology Licensing (QTL) and Global Affairs of Qualcomm Incorporated.
“We have been setting up labs to test 5G devices manufactured by both Vietnam and other countries. Therefore, I hope that Qualcomm will support the ministry in developing these standards and tests, not only for 5G but also 6G,” Hung said at a meeting with Alex Rogers in the US during the ongoing visit to the US paid by Vietnam’s Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh.
Hung stressed the importance of 5G and 6G devices in Vietnam’s digital economy and the cooperation between Qualcomm and Vietnamese firms like Viettel, VNPT, Mobifone, BKAV, and Vinfast.
The cooperation covers the design, development, and production of 5G infrastructure equipment; support of 5G network testing solutions and production of smart camera devices (AI cameras), and cooperation in connectivity solutions for electric vehicles and smart charging station systems.
Qualcomm is supporting the design and production of low-cost laptops for students in Vietnam under the “Waves and computers for children” program, assisting innovative technology startup programs, and research projects at the Posts and Telecommunications Institute of Technology (PTIT).
The two sides agreed to accelerate the research, development, and commercialization of products, especially 5G equipment, to promptly meet Vietnam’s needs and export.

On this occasion, Vietnam’s military-run Viettel Group and Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. announced plans to collaborate and develop a next-generation 5G Radio Unit (RU) with massive multiple-input, multiple-output (MIMO) capabilities and distributed units (DUs). This focuses on helping to expedite the development and roll-out of 5G network infrastructure and services in Vietnam and globally.
Using Qualcomm platforms combined with its own advanced hardware and software systems, Viettel expects to accelerate the development and commercialization of high-performance solutions at a low cost.
Viettel is one of four global partners trusted and selected by Qualcomm to participate in the development and application of this new 5G chipset of Qualcomm. According to Qualcomm, the partnership will help advance the cellular ecosystem and accelerate the innovation cycle.
Nguyen Vu Ha, General Director, Viettel High Technology said: “This collaboration between Qualcomm Technologies and Viettel Group will be the cornerstone of Vietnam’s national strategy for Made in Vietnam 5G infrastructure.”
“Qualcomm Technologies, as a global technology leader in 5G, is looking forward to collaborating with Viettel for the development of Open RAN [radio access network] solutions that will establish the foundation for Vietnam’s next-generation of wireless networks,” said Durga Malladi, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Cellular Modems and Infrastructure, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc.
In another move, Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Group (VNPT) and Casa Systems signed a memorandum of understanding to cooperate, research, develop, integrate, and package VNPT’s solutions with Casa’s technologies (such as 5G core and RAN, Security GW, etc.) to bring to market digital solutions that meet the needs of corporate and government customers.
